James Bohannon, Excellence in Beginning Teaching
Philosophy of Teaching
Upon acceptance of my current position as a technology teacher, I would soon be informed that not only will I be receiving a new classroom, but also embarking upon a curriculum that is new to our campus. As I walked into that classroom in early August, I caught sight of fifteen Lego robots and their accompanying five-hundred or so seemingly miniature parts and pieces. As I attempted to sort through what seemed to be an endless collection of small plastic pieces, I knew my journey as a teacher had begun.
In the technologically driven society that we live in, it is vital to provide young minds a place to gather the resources and skills necessary to aide in their success. As a first year teacher, I have come to realize that conveying new concepts is only a portion of what the educational experience can entail. In my pursuit to reinforce to my students the necessity of technology to their academic and personal success, they have shown remarkable enthusiasm and in doing so have made teaching not only enjoyable but exciting. Their uninhibited minds provide new thoughts and ideas on ways to expand and enhance the learning of their classmates and those who will follow in their foot steps. In addition to facilitating and providing the opportunity for these thoughts and ideas, it is not only my intent, but my responsibility to proactively pass on this knowledge and communicate the new ideas I encounter as a teacher. Imparting this information gained from student interaction will undoubtedly serve as the catalyst to the success of my students in the current class and those who will follow them.
At times, I have felt as though I am a facilitator of an endless supply of cutting-edge information that I gain from conducting a technology classroom every day. So, as my journey into teaching proceeds, I continue to sort through the little plastic parts, knowing that my students, like those parts, need to be constructed from the ground up to achieve what I know they are capable of achieving.
