Philosophy of Teaching

Beginning teacher of the year!  Wow!  This is such an awesome title for a forty seven year old mom who graduated from college with a degree in education.  For many years I have been busy raising my children, my first career.  Most of what I know now, I learned from them.  I gained invaluable information from each of them including their needs for self-esteem, peer acceptance, and intellectual curiosity.  I have learned that no two children are alike and that no two children have the same needs.  I also know that children go through many changes from kindergarten to the first year of middle school, and then on to high school.  All of these are special times of growth and maturation for children.  Frequently, these transitions can be difficult and require, in my opinion, a special kind of teacher.  Aside from instructing the students in the core subjects, I believe a good teacher must embrace his or her students and help them grow into self-assured, responsible people I know that having a caring teacher can make the difference between being a confident and successful student and one who fails to realize his or her potential.  As my children grow through school, what better place is there for me to be than in a school, sharing what I have learned over the past eighteen years and taking the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life.  Yes, I can instruct them to find South America on a world map, and yes, I can educate them about nouns and verbs and also the basic principles of sixth grade.  However, I also choose to teach with an open and caring heart by reaching out to each child no matter what his or her abilities are and by encouraging my students to reach for the “Stars!”  I am anticipating the day when, as a “seasoned” teacher, former students will come back as healthy, caring, well adjusted, and educated, young adults.  It excites me to think I may have played a small part in their success!
