VIII. Resolution Supporting H.R. 648 (relating to No Child Left Behind Act)

Presenter: Doug Otto / Mary Beth King

Purpose: A - Request decision - closure required

Time: 5 minutes

Description:

The No Child Left Behind law is up for reauthorization by Congress in 2007. The law, which has been in effect for over five years, has arguably raised student achievement in public schools across America as well as brought focus on adequate yearly progress, qualified teachers, and standards-based accountability. However, there has been much criticism about the way many of the Act's provisions were measuring school campus and school district accountability. The law has been labeled "punitive" through its many sanctions for schools and districts not meeting adequate yearly progress on several measures which are very inflexible.

The National School Board Association is requesting that school district show their support for H.R. 648. This proposed legislation would bring needed changes to the No Child Left Behind program. A summary of H.R. 648 is included. It is recommended that the Board approve the attached resolution and send a copy to those individuals listed within the body of the resolution. A quick reference guide to H.R. 648 can be found on the NSBA website at the following address: http://www.nsba.org/site/docs/40400/40323.pdf
