Board Agenda - March 21, 2006
VII. Stinson Elementary Enrollment Relief
Presenter: Jeff Bailey
Purpose: A - Request decision - closure required
Time: 10 minutes
Description:
Stinson Elementary School is currently over capacity with projected enrollments showing continued growth over the next 5 years. In reviewing the projected enrollments for Stinson Elementary it is clear the school will continue to face overcrowding unless action is taken to correct it. The Stinson campus can not accommodate additional relocatable classrooms. As summarized in the attached report Miller could relieve Stinson by proposing the rezoning of Breckenridge Point Apartments and Clearwater Creek Apartments from Stinson to Miller. The report reflects the change in projected enrollments for both Stinson and Miller.
Recommendation:
It is the administration's recommendation to relieve Stinson Elementary School by rezoning the Breckenridge Point Apartments and Clearwater Creek Apartments to Miller Elementary School with the opening of the 2006-07 school year in August. These students would be eligible for bus transportation to Miller Elementary. Current 4th graders would be allowed to stay at Stinson for their 5th grade year, but district transportation would not be provided.
Business Impact:
Add relocatable classrooms to Miller Elementary School to accommodate the 97 additional students from Stinson. The estimated cost for relocatable classrooms is $ 48,000. There will be no additional cost for transportation since these students already receive bus services.
