k. Texas Educator Excellence Grant (T.E.E.G.)

Presenter: Jeff Bailey

Purpose: A - Request decision - closure required

Time: No time limit

Description:

The Texas Education Agency implemented the first of five planned cycles of the Texas Educator Excellent Grant (T.E.E.G.) in the 2004-2005 school year. The T.E.E.G. is a non-competitive grant available to a targeted group of elementary, middle, high school, all grades, and alternative education campuses who fall in the top half of economically disadvantaged campuses and demonstrate the highest level of student achievement or comparable improvement, as measured through the state accountability system. Grant awards are divided into two parts. Part I funds must represent seventy-five percent of the funds and must be awarded to classroom teachers. Part II funds represent no more than twenty-five percent of the funds and may be used to: 1) award other campus personnel (including administrators); 2) provide professional development; and 3) support other promising practices aimed at improving teacher quality and raising student achievement.

In the cycle one of the grant, Mendenhall Elementary was eligible for $75,000 and did participate in the T.E.E.G. program. This year Bowman Middle School and Mendenhall Elementary School are eligible for cycle 3 of the T.E.E.G. program. Bowman is eligible to receive $140,000 and Mendenhall is eligible to receive $80,000. Through a campus vote, both Bowman and Mendenhall have elected to participate in cycle three of the T.E.E.G. Each campus is in the process of developing campus plans.

Campus plans must be approved by a district-level committee. School boards are not required to approve campus plans however, boards must approve individual teacher award amounts if less than program recommendations.

Recommendation:

While it is recommended that individual awards to teachers range between $3000 and $10,000, the administration requests approval for Bowman Middle School's range of individuals teacher awards be between $500 and $2000, and Mendenhall Elementary School's range of individual teacher awards be between $800 and $1412.
