Armstrong TeacherArmstrong Middle School

Writers' Workshop - Shirley Sadowski, Linda Eckstein, Tom Nudd, $1,200.00 - In two day-long Writers’ Workshops, two different groups of thirty seventh graders selected for their potential to raise their scores on TAKS writing from one level to the next higher level, will spend the day in a small group setting learning about and practicing specific techniques that will increase their TAKS writing scores, while having fun. One workshop will be held in November and the other in early February.

Barksdale Elementary School

Global Grooves: The Celebration Continues! - Heather Coleman, Tina Raymond, $1,300.00 - This grant will give 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to bridge the gap between diverse cultures within the school community and around the world. Students will participate in diverse music making through song, dance, and playing instruments of other cultures. This grant will allow students to play authentic instruments, share postcards with children around the world and interview guest community members who are native to the specific culture being studied.

Teach Me To Learn! - Nancy Grant, Kay Glawe, $1,500.00 - Teach Me To Learn! is a project to educate parents. By providing them with skills and tools, parents will be able to work on activities at home that will ultimately benefit students in the classroom. This project will foster a spirit of collaboration that will last throughout the student’s school years.

Beaty Early Childhood School

TOPS: Teaching Our Parents Success - Elena Farmer, Cindy Kellogg, Ashlie Souders, Isabel Marquez, Eleonora Frigerio, $850.00 - Through a series of workshops, parents will participate in hands-on activities and discussions to learn and practice strategies that will support the development of their preschool child in the areas of math, science and early literacy. Research has demonstrated strong home support as a significant factor in the later success of young children from culturally and linguistically diverse families. The Teaching Our Parents Success (TOPS) workshop series will expand to address the critical need for stronger partnerships between Plano ISD and the culturally and linguistically diverse families as well as an increased emphasis on early math and science.

Bethany Elementary School

Windows of Opportunity Library - Kim Murff, Jane Chute, Kathy Carrico, Christi Pavlasek, Connie Christal, Marie Rosenbaum, $1,500.00 - The Windows of Opportunity Library will be composed of video/media and related books that will provide "tools in the tool belt" for teachers and parents to enhance the learning of diverse learners. Topics can include curriculum dvelopment and modification, behavior management, play skills, social skills and social cognition, language disorders, auditory impairment learning disabilities, visual strategies, social communication, sensory integration dysfunction, emotional disturbance, ADD, Autism, Asperger's PDD-NOS and non-verbal learning disorders, music and play therapy, as well as the diverse needs of gifted learners.

Beverly Elementary School

Comprehension Cafe - Cynthia Smith, Kim Luczycki Rexann Pawloski Ami Gunter, $600.00 - Third-grade students will practice reading selections of poetry and assorted fiction and nonfiction picture books. Third-grade students will host kindergarten and first-grade students at their Reading Restaurant. The younger students will be given a menu and asked to choose a poetry appetizer, a picture book entree, and a joke or riddle for dessert. Third graders will read each selection while their younger partner enjoys a delicious muffin to round out his meal.

Beverly Teacher

Bowman Middle School

ASAP Attack! - George King, Principal, $1,500.00 - ASAP Attack! is an after school program designed to target learning needs of Bowman's LEP and economically disadvantaged populations. Selected students will be able to enjoy a healthy snack, receive tutoring assistance with homework, test preparation, and TAKS skills through the service of UTD tutors and Bowman teachers. Bus transportation will be provided to deliver these students back to their home elementary campus, the Douglass Community Center, or the Spring Creek Trailer Park.

Band Together - Chris Ostertag, Assistant Band Director, $1,500.00 - Band Together is a resource used to help disadvantaged students have the materials needed for success. During this time when renting an instrument for families is difficult, Band Together helps with the daily materials students need for playing their instruments. The grant helps students achieve success by making the resources available to every student.

Instruments for Success - Brenda G. Johnson, Orchestra Director, $1,500.00 - Plano has long recognized the importance of music in a child's well-rounded education. Bowman wishes to give as many students as possible the opportunity to participate and excel in a life-enriching experience such as orchestra. With these grant funds, the middle school orchestra would be able to purchase as many as 10-15 instruments for economically-disadvantaged students.

Padres Unidos - Adrian Rodriguez, Kristen Hoy, Lynn Ojeda, $1,500.00 - Bowman Middle School is entering the third year of a parent involvement program called Padres Unidos, a parent education and support group initiated by the campus PTO board and administrators. The Padres Unidos group will meet throughout the year with new and innovative programming to address different needs in the Spanish-speaking community.

Proud Promising Raiders - Linda DeLaney, Gayle Scott, $615.00 - Proud Promising Raiders, PPR, is an after school program to enhance the academic, organizational, and social development of Special Education students. PPR includes a group of diverse learners who have limited access to the resources of the community. Through PPR activities and weekly meetings, these students will increase their knowledge of community resources and practice life skills.

Words for Life - Kathie Williams, English Dept. Head, $1,500.00 - This project will purchase pocketbook dictionaries for use in the classroom, as well as to allow the students to check them out for overnight use. Many socioeconomically disadvantaged students do not have access to a dictionary at home.

Christie ElementaryChristie Elementary School

Science Sleuths - Miriam Madill, ESL Teacher/IC Vertical Team Chair, $1,316.70 - Extraordinary Experiments! Incredible Investigations! Rewarding Research! Science Sleuths is a five- week after-school science club where fifth grade students explore the world of science and build background knowledge through engaging, hands-on experiments. The project will culminate with the completion of a science project from start to finish. The goal of Science Sleuths is to raise TAKS science scores by encouraging creative and complex thinking.

Daffron Elementary School

Holistic Therapy Solutions for Students with Autism - Julie Spence, Bilingual Special Educator, $497.57 - Students with autism will benefit from a variety of therapies, including sensory, deep pressure, visual effects, swinging and aromatherapy. These therapies work to calm the nervous system of students with autism, allowing them to focus on academic needs. Without therapy, students with autism often become anxious or restless, and are unable to direct their energy on school tasks.

Daffron, Haggar, Huffman, Jackson, Skaggs, Stinson, Weatherford and Wells Elementary Schools

5th Grade Book Club Co-Op (or 8 Librarians Searching for Some Novels) - Laura Blankenship, Cherly Gee, Barbara Gomon, Jayme Karen, Angelia Hopwood-Lewis, Sarah Thorn, Sandy Williams, Janis Hall, $1,500.00 $1,500.00 - The 5th Grade Book Club Co-Op is comprised of 8 librarians from across the district who are striving to keep students excited about leisure reading as they approach their teenage years. The Co-Op librarians will form 5th Grade Book Clubs that will meet in relaxed and fun environments to discuss a variety of genres of books. These meetings will help students keep that early love of reading alive and develop new interests that will encourage them to become lifelong readers.

Davis Elementary School

Breaking the Sound Barrier to Literacy Skills, Part 2: A Listening Library - Deborah Tubbs, Debbie Martin, Molly Bailey, Sarah Fromhold, Kara Bradford, Brenda Terenas, Jilynn Wall, Amanda Prout, $1,000.00 - A Listening Center will be created, where students listen to recorded books via tape players and headphones. Here, students can practice/reinforce reading skills independently. Using cutting-edge commercial CD/cassette boom boxes, with enhanced acoustic features, this motivating classroom activity will now be available to students with hearing impairment. Along with a comprehensive audio library--with varied levels and genres of books--students can have the opportunity to build their listening skills, improve reading skills and have a more well-rounded classroom experience.

Bound to Read, Bound to Dream, College Bound - Amy Durham, $1,500.00 - Bound to Read, Bound to Dream, College Bound is a project to support continued learning at home for students and parents. This project combines technology with reading tools for students to have enrichment through a support program for parents. Parents will leave these sessions equipped with the tools necessary to make their child's dream of going to college a reality.

Leaping Towards Our Dreams! - Clarissa Adas, Rodrigo Segovia, Natalie Shanks, Elia Soto, and Rebecca Rey, $1,500.00 - Forman will utilize Leap Pad merchandise to improve learning at different levels and in all content areas. Teachers will check out Leap Pads to academically low students who have little or no parent support at home due to illiteracy. Students will gain academic success through the use of the Leap Pads at home with their families.

Partnering with Parents: Our kids are college-bound - Tricia Lancaster, Martha Preston, Cimberly Riggs, Victoria Marshall, Mercedes Banachiewicz, Michelle Powell,$1,500.00 - Forman will create an educational foundation for college-bound students by providing two parent workshops which will break through the barriers and misconceptions of the TAKS tests and create a learning partnership between the school and the parents. A large component of the TAKS parent workshop and the family game night will be an awareness piece of the college requirements and the necessary steps in academic coursework to meet these requirements.

Frankford Middle School

Parental Involvement - a Pathway to Progress, Kaye St.Peter, ESL Dept. Head, $1,000.00 - Educational research shows a link exists between parental involvement and academic achievement, classroom behavior, school attendance, and dropout rates. But, due to cultural and language barriers, a hesitation to become involved often exists for many Hispanic parents. These parents will be invited to two family nights - nights facilitated by Hispanic speakers who will address these barriers as well as other educational needs and concerns.

Links to Literacy - Karyn Wynne, Library Specialist, $1,500.00 - Links to Literacy is a take home reading program that supplies students and parents with books that are on the student's independent reading level. Parents will be able to use the enclosed stopwatch to monitor their reading fluency and comprehension cards to aide in their child's understanding of the text.

Haggard MSHaggard Middle School

Life Skills Class - Vicki Pickett, Teacher, $1,496.80 - The goal of the Life Skills Program is to design curriculum and activities that allow students to develop skills that will enable them to be more independent in their environment and enrich the quality of their lives. With the Life Skills Program, the students will become more independent in daily living skills and learn to be active participants in the community.

Haggard Middle School, Vines High School and Plano Senior High School

Literacy Alive - Susan Mullins, Donna Moreland, Rakel Paul, $2,880.00 - The Literacy Alive! project will teach students to look past their own disabilities as an obstacle to success and use hard work and education to reach their full potential. The secondary students of the Plano Regional Day School Program for the Deaf will invite guest speakers with disabilities to speak at a series of two formal dinners. The events will emphasize achievement in spite of disability and the role of literacy in success.

Hickey Elementary School

Awesome Amazing Authors (AAA) - Michele Rollins, Laura Durda, $885.50 - Amazing Awesome Authors enhances students’ writing experiences. Each student will produce a spiral bound book of their own writings to take home. These writings are typed by students before becoming part of their themed book.

Writer's Workshop - Page Finley, Margaret Dyer, $1,400.00 - Writer's Workshop is a program that inspires children to write through the use of good literature, teacher modeling and opportunities for the students to share their writing with their classmates and families. At other schools, writing scores have been raised and children became inspired writers. Teachers and students alike will see the value and potential of Writer's Workshop.

Hightower ElementaryHightower Elementary School

SPArKS (Scientific Processes Are Key Skills) - Sara Stewart and Hilary Lamb, $688.36 - Science is at the heart of everyday life. Yearly diagnostics and fifth grade Science TAKS results show that children need more experience with science and vocabulary in consistent, weekly activities that are exciting and meaningful for them. The SPArKS cart will bring hands-on, real-life, meaningful experiences to third graders rotating through classrooms on a weekly basis.

Huffman Elementary School

ABC Bags: Letter Sounds Are All you Need to Read! - Andra Harris, Kindergarten Team Leader, $500.00 - This project consists of classroom and take-home alphabet activity bags. The contents of the bags will include plastic upper and lower case letters, letter formation cards for practicing handwriting, alphabet cards, and letter/picture cards. Also included will be cards listing activities to be used with the supplies in each bag.

Fidget Fix-It - Jane Oestreich, Hoda Abdel-Gani, $1,333.87 - Fidget Fix-Its are designed to enhance learning opportunities for those students who have difficulty sitting still. Each grade level is supplied with a kit of items that give these students suitable replacement behaviors and help them pay attention to the teacher. Fidget Fix-Its offer a variety of alternatives to help combat the wiggles and fidgets of children while enriching learning opportunities in the classroom.

Hunt Elementary School

Fluency Fun Bags - Trish Alway, first grade teacher, $500.00 - Fluency Fun Bags for first grade are a school-to-home connection consisting of tote bags for teachers to use in the classroom or to send home with students needing improvement in the area of reading fluency. The bags are designed to increase first grade students’ reading speed through a variety of activities including but not limited to audio devices, games, and books on tape. Each bag will contain a variety of tools and instructions which parents, students and teachers can use to improve children’s reading skills.

Jackson and Bethany Elementary Schools

Everyday Language Made Simple: ELMS Club - Angela Marshall, Liz Steinbaugh, Erica Stewart, $1,300.00 - ELMS Club is an after school program for students and their families who speak a language other than English. The purpose of the ELMS Club is to provide language kits, activities, books, and games for students and parents to use during club time and at home. ELMS Club provides an opportunity to practice English while interacting with other students and parents.

Jackson Elementary School

Morning Math Mania - Kitty Schieck, PACE Specialist, $350.00 - Morning Math Mania is a before school progrm designed to raise math TAKS scores, both passing and commended. It will foster a sense of community among all students, while offering opportunity for leadership to older students.

Ticketing Students For Success: Passport Required - Marietta Sterling, Kris Benson, Lorraine Shimizu, $1,500.00 - Learning is a journey. Jackson’s goal is to give students a ticket to success through the simple gift of transportation to and from tutoring twice a week. Combine eager learners, creative teachers, a free ticket and time, students will have the tools to make their big dreams come true.

Jasper High School

Finals Round-Up - Melanie Schulte, Stefan Morrow, $976.80 - Finals Round-Up will provide an after-school opportunity for students who are at risk of failing for the semester in a core class to join an organized study group to help prepare for their final exam. The purpose would be to enhance individual learning by using a group process, to learn by teaching others, and to help student be responsible for their own learning.

McCall Elementary School

Reading to Go - Margie Flores, Ginny Kivel, Mary Lynn Pick, $1,439.11
Reading to Go is a program that puts audio books into the hands of English Language Learners. This project provides a variety of books with tapes, a bag to carry them in, tape players, and activities to complete after reading and listening to the book. Comprehensible input is an important component of language acquisition, and this program will allow students, and their families, oral language development and opportunities for comprehensible input.

Writer’s Library: Growing Accomplished Writers on an Elementary Campus - Nancy Bassett, Debbie Floyd, Esmeraldo Palomares, $1,228.39 - Growing Writer’s on an Elementary Campus is geared towards equipping teachers with effective writing lessons. It is imperative that teachers have rich literature to read to students that demonstrate the Six Traits of writing. In creating this Writer’s Library, teachers will be able to easily find a lesson and a book that can be used to teach each trait.

Dual Language Literacy Library - Catherine Morales, Maximino Morales, Nitzaliz Roman, $1,500.00 - The program will provide materials to enrich the reading, listening, comprehension and vocabulary skills of students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Funds from the grant will purchase multi-set books, audio tapes and leveled books that are theme relative to everyday experiences, science and historical knowledge and promote multicultural traits.

Meadows Elementary School

FC²=Success (Fluency+Comprehension Center=Success) - Monica McCaffrey, Jenine Smith, Patricia Balderas, Whitney Watkins, Fidencio de la Rosa, Cynthia Garnder, $500.00 - FC²=Success will provide an opportunity for readers of all levels to practice reading, listening, speaking and writing. Books on tape allow students to gain fluency and in turn comprehension skills. In addition, they will benefit ELL students and struggling readers by providing support to develop confidence, word knowledge, comprehension and fluency.

The Read Naturally Fluency Lab - Jeanette Aguirre, Stacy Kimbriel, Frankie Ramirez, Kass DuRoss, $1,471.00 - The Read Naturally Fluency Lab will provide elementary students, in grades 2 - 5, with an individualized method to practice fluency, phrasing and expression in reading, using differentiated non-fiction materials. The Read Naturally program also allows for students to take home reading passages and guides so that they may practice their skills at home.

Memorial Elementary School

Academia de Padres Comprometidos (APC) - Elizabeth P. Griffin, Carolina P. Williams, Ann Gray, $1,500 - This program promotes parental involvement and enhances our students’ personal and academic growth. This program is designed to create an awareness of our teaching methods along with the expectations of parents, students and their progress. Our central goal is to enrich students’ academic experiences using valuable strategies that can be used at home and with their parents.

GOT SCIENCE? - Mandy Brock, Doug Chapman, $1,500.00 - GOT SCIENCE? is an after school club for fourth and fifth grade students to build background knowledge of all key concepts of the science field, including nature of science, life science, physical science, and earth science. This program will include hands on experiments, investigations that will expand the students’ knowledge and understanding of the scientific processes, and introduce the students to future opportunities in the science fields. The purpose is to encourage and excite students about the many facets of science as they prepare for the 5th grade TAKS.

Writers' Workshop - R. Ann Gray, Elizabeth Griffin, Deborah Jackson, Michelle Cohen, $1,500.00 - A weekly Writers' Workshop conducted by the school's literacy team will be held in fourth grade. Campus literacy personnel will also coordinate school-wide writing trainings for K-5 using the state writing rubric to provide continuity of instruction throughout the campus.

Mendenhall ElementaryMendenhall Elementary School

Fun with Fluency - Jeanne Shilstone, Juana Hagen, Marian Kincaid, Nydia Luna, Debbie Santiago, Susan Simpson, $1,400.00 - This program is designed to facilitate supplemental fluency practice in the home environment. Students targeted will be able to check out packs that will include a book specifically designed to improve fluency, a stopwatch, and a graph. Students will easily be able to chart progress and celebrate successes both at home and at school

Lights, Camera, Action - Joan Bartell, Literacy Support Reading Teacher, $670.00 - As part of the balanced literacy program, 2nd and 3rd grade students will use content-based Reader's Theater scripts in their Language Arts classes. Reader's Theater is an authentic strategy for using repeated reading, the most widely-practiced method for improving oral reading fluency. Improving oral reading fluency will ultimately improve reading comprehension.

Murphy Middle School

Beefing Up Vocabulary 3 - Susan Burgess, Barbara Butt, $475.00 - This project helps to prepare students for life as skilled readers by "beefing up" vocabulary instruction. It will provide (if awarded) resources for instruction and refreshments for practice sessions for the Readers Digest National Word Power Challenge (RDNWPC), a nationwide vocabulary contest. The middle school’s campus plan includes a focus on vocabulary in all subject areas, and Beefing Up Vocabulary 3 will enhance student word power across the school.

Murphy Middle School, Hendrick Middle School, Clark High School and Williams High School

Wired ES (Electric Strings) - Brian Henson, Dennis Langevin, Andrew Goins, Ron Planks, $2,781.30
" Wires ES" is the education, production and performance of an East Cluster Electric String Ensemble. Performers will be able to see how the classically trained musician fits into the modern world of music. The orchestra directors will provide the education in every facet of the modern performing ensmble through classical, jazz, and modern music genres.

Pearson Early Childhood School

Joint Attention Routines - Karen A. Cannon, Kimberly B. Gorham, $500.00 - We would like to develop a bank of joint attention routines that can be used with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. A joint attention routine is a play activity with a specific sequence and language content that is repeated with one or more partners. It promotes social awareness, turn-taking, imitation, and functional play.

Plano Senior High School TeacherPlano Senior High School, Haggard Middle School and Wilson Middle School

Creative Art Mentors - Jaclyn Moore, Daren Causey, Chad Kisamore, $1,556.00 - Senior high school art students will learn mentoring skills and the fine art of producing Polaroid image transfers and emulsion prints. They will then teach this technical process to two groups of middle school art students during an after school program at two middle school feeder schools. Through this series of classes, middle school students in need of mentors will receive the benefit of a stress-free environment where they can exercise their imaginations, and see up-close the results of what being involved in extracurricular activities can provide for their sociability and self-esteem.

Rasor Elementary School

D.E.A.L. Club - Ashley Green, Marla Sallier, Cheryl Jackson, Donna Pair, Tonia Graham, $850.00 - The program will help students develop internal assets and motivation to succeed with academic tasks, and will assist Special Education students as well as all at risk and low performing students in fulfilling current expectations to bridge the achievement gap by next year. The D.E.A.L. Club will provide educational materials, games and hands-on enriching activities that will further enhance and reinforce the scientific principles taught in their Integrated Science classes.

Rice Middle School

School Newspaper - Lorrie Weidenbruch, Lorinda Beekmann, $600.00 - The newspaper serves as a forum to showcase student talent and to promote school spirit. It also fulfills the our school’s goal of establishing positive relationships with students to create trust and cooperation through leadership and team-building opportunities for our students. Additionally, it fulfills a goal of improving the campus character education program by reinforcing the weekly character education values. The newspaper will enhance the TAKS reading and writing objectives.

Robinson Middle School

Homework Club - Nancy Kovatis, Academic Specialist, $707.55 - In a study of our Robinson’s accountability report, it was noted that economically disadvantaged students showed a significant need for additional academic support in school. To address this need, Homework Club was devised as a plan to help close the gap for these students and provide an environment conducive to concentration and productivity which is sometimes missing in their homes. With clear ties to individual student curriculum, Homework Club should help close the achievement gap and provide another intervention to support college readiness for these students. Discussion also included the need for funding snacks for the students, since most of them haven’t eaten since 11:30. Research supports the fact that students perform better after a nutritional snack.

Shepard Elementary School

Literacy Links - Brandy Burns, Jamie Baer, $607.66 - Literacy Links began last year in first grade in an effort to provide more one-on-one opportunities for struggling readers. After just one semester there was a positive effect Literacy Links on both the students and the volunteers. Literacy Link activities not only reinforce necessary skills, but also serve as a motivator for students. Many students begin to meet and exceed fluency and vocabulary goals. Volunteers are excited about the experience.

ESL for Parents - Sheryl Sanguinetti, Paulina Vial, $1,462.21 - Many of the parents of Sigler’s bilingual students have very limited English proficiency. In addition, many parents have significant skill gaps in their primary language. Both of these factors contribute to parents being unable to offer educational support to their children at home. Furthermore, many parents lack the necessary vocational skills to seek employment beyond a minimum wage situation. As a result, parents are working many hours at more than one job and are not able to spend valuable time at home with their children. Through the series of ESL classes, parents will acquire knowledge and skills that promote an attitude of lifelong learning for themselves and their children.

Reading in the Classroom - Diane Hakari - $500.00 - In the second grade, students are really wanting to read everything they can get their hands on. Chapter books are especially exciting to them. Having different levels of books to send home as nightly readers would be not only fun but beneficial at the same time. Having a listening station library creates a relaxing way of enjoying books by letting the children listen to and follow along as a story is read to them. The follow-up for both would come through activities such as writing book reports, summaries, discussions in small groups, etc.

Vines High School

Partners in Making Big Dreams a Reality - Janis Williams, Roxanne Burleson, Laurie Leifer, Linda Buteyn, Carol Cox, Becky Salonish, Francie Mikulas, Lesley Seele, Kristi Whitman, $1,500.00 - In an effort to help students achieve their dreams, the first step is ensuring that they graduate high school. In order for this to happen, all students must be successful on the TAKS test. The TAKS tutorial program builds focused partnerships with students in our special populations as identified by the Academic Excellence Indicator System of the State of Texas. Through an intensive tutoral program, we can customize both the curriculum and the instruction for selected students and meet them at their learning level.

Wells Elementary School

S.M.A.R.T.S. - Donna Hartman, Sharon Tracy, $1465.00 -Being involved in the activities in the classroom expose all students to higher level visual and analytical thinking, perception and reasoning skills, ability to find patterns and relationships, and right brain/left brain combined challenges. These games are designed to capture students’ interest while teaching the methods used to master comprehension, logic and intellectual perseverance.

Williams High School

W103 in the A.M. - Glenda Rouse, Administrative Intern, $1,500.00 - These morning tutorials serve Williams’ most at-risk students. Teachers need to spend more time with at-risk students working on their core areas of math, reading and writing. Wilson Middle School

K. R. Wood and Band - Lisa Farmer, Michael Diaz, $900.00 - K.R. Wood and Band is a unique method of teaching kids by breaking up the normal setting of lectures, projects, and assessments. Last school year was Wilson’s first time to experience the program, and the children and parents showed great interest in the production. While it is predominently for students, both teachers and parents become well versed with the objectives that day.

Vocabulary Scrabble - Susan Wail, English/Special Education Teacher, $299.85 - Using Scrabble board games, preprinted TAKS vocabulary lists and their own competitive natures, seventh and eighth graders in Special Ed will improve their spelling and vocabulary. This will not only lead to increased scores on high-stakes testing, but will also empower the student to raise his or her self-exteem via better reading comprehension.
