Top Story

		Holiday Art Contest Winner Student Karen Chen's original drawing captured first place in the 2005 Plano ISD and Webb & Webb Holiday Greeting Card Art Contest, "The Art of Giving." The Shepton High School ninth grade student and three additional contest finalists will be recognized by the school board on December 13. View the four finalists' artwork on our website.

Achievements

Siemens Westinghouse Finalists

Four Plano ISD students have been named Regional Finalists in the prestigious Siemens Westinghouse Competition. Jeff Nanney and Erik Feng, Plano East Senior High School, and Wilson Hseih and Lisa Herrington, Plano West Senior High School are Finalists in the national competition, which encourages students to undertake research in science, math, engineering and technology.

First-Year Accomplishments

An advanced placement physics camp, summer research internships, faculty and student scholarships, dual-admissions agreements and an executive coaching program are among the achievements of the Hi-TECCC Coalition. Celebrating its one-year anniversary, the coalition brings together area corporations and educational entities to promote high-quality science, technology, engineering and math education for North Texas students

Make State Honor Roll

Wilson Middle School and Clark High School are among 130 Texas schools recently named to the list of 2005 TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll Schools. Sponsored by The Texas Business and Education Coalition and Just for the Kids, the Honor Roll recognizes schools that meet demanding performance standards for three consecutive years.

		Literacy Specialist Honored by Forum Memorial Elementary School Literacy Specialist Ann Gray was honored with an "Educator Award" for outstanding community service at the Plano Community Forum’s 23rd Annual Banquet.

		Young Scientists Attend Expo in Chile Daniel Wang and Enhao Li attended 2005 Expo Science International in Santiago, Chile, this summer. During their visit, they were honored to be invited to the United States Embassy to celebrate the July 4th Holiday with the U.S. Ambassador.

Trustees to Apply for State Waiver to Start 2006-07 School Year on August 9 At their November 1 meeting, school trustees held a public hearing regarding a calendar waiver request to begin school on August 9, 2006. The vast majority of speakers indicated support of the board’s waiver request. Also at the meeting, trustees heard a bond issuance update and a report on the Statistical Analysis System (SAS). They also approved several policies and Consent Agenda items.

		Children's Book Week November 13-19 Elementary schools across the district are planning "Children's Book Week" activities for November 13-19. During this annual event, our elementary schools will help foster a love and proficiency for reading in children while promoting the importance of parental involvement. 		Student Theatre Performances "Annie," "School House Rock," "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Alice in Wonderland" are among the many school theatre productions to be performed across the district. View our website for a complete listing.

		PTAs to Host Parent Workshops The Plano ISD Council of PTAs and its member schools and associations announce several upcoming parent meetings and workshops. 		National Parenting Conference Nov. 7-8 Practical Parent Education is hosting its annual National Parenting Conference on November 7 and 8 in Addison. "The Power of Childhood" is the theme for the event, which includes motivational speakers and sessions for parent educators. View details on the Practical Parent Education website.
