Plano
East Theatre Captures District
One-Act Title for
3rd Consecutive Year
Plano East Senior High
School students won the District
UIL One-Act Play Contest. Their performance of "The
Marriage of Bette and Boo," under the direction
of Lisa Hale,
will advance to the Area contest on April 8. Students
will perform free for the public at 7 p.m. on April
6 at the
school, 3000 Los Rios Blvd.

Regional
Science Fair Winners
A dozen Plano ISD students
earned grand prize and special awards at the March
25 Beal Bank Regional Science Fair, qualifying them
to advance to the International Science and Engineering
Fair to be held in May. A complete list of nearly

3 & 4 - National Principal Hotline
Families may participate
in the 17th Annual Ask-a-Principal Hotline to be
manned by members of the National Association of
Elementary School Principals from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
(Central Time) on April 3 and 4. Call 1-800-944-1601
to speak to school principals and school psychologists
who will answer questions about education and children.
Callers will also receive a free booklet filled with
advice from principals.

Enjoy Pre-Gala Breakfast at Blue Mesa
More than 120 Teacher
of the Year nominees enjoyed breakfast on March 22
at Blue Mesa Grill. Sponsored by Medical Center of
Plano, the event allowed
nominees to relax and enjoy each other's company
prior to the Teacher of the Year Gala which will
be held

Contribute $72,000
to Benefit Education Foundation
Plano ISD Employees who
participated in the Education Foundation's
2006 Employee
Contribution Campaign raised a record $72,000 to support
the Foundation's programs. Ninety-four percent of our
schools and departments surpassed their goals in supporting
the "Touch
the of
a Child" campaign. |

Summer
Music Camps
Middle school students
in Plano and the surrounding area may register for
Plano ISD's popular summer music camps. Orchestra and
band camps will be held in June. Applications may be
downloaded on our website.  |

April
6 & 17 School Board Candidate Forums
Candidates - Four candidates will vie for
two seats on the Plano ISD Board of Trustees in the May 13
election. In Place 6, Incumbent Melody Timinsky will be challenged
by Robert Canright, and two newcomers - Nathan Barbera and
Missy Bender - will run opposed in Place 7, to fill the vacancy
left by Trustee Dr. Allan Bird, the district’s longest-serving
trustee with seven terms.
Forums - Plano ISD staff and community
members are invited to attend the following upcoming
school board candidate forums: Thursday, April
6, at 7:30 p.m. -

March
21 Business Meeting Update
Among other items, school trustees took the following
action at their March 21 business meeting. Autism Society Appreciation -
President Duncan
Webb invited Nagla Moussa of the Autism Society of Collin
County to share words of appreciation on
behalf of members of the organization;
Music Appreciation -
Kathy Kuddes, director of fine arts, recognized March as
Music in Our Schools
Month, Theatre for Life Month and Youth
Art Month and thanked trustees for their continued support
of fine arts programs;
Check Presentation -
Tony Browning of Office Depot presented a check for $38,751.38
to the district for its
participation
in Office Depot’s
purchasing program;
2006-07 Teacher Compensation Package -
Trustees approved the compensation package for 2006-07 as
presented by Deputy
Superintendent Danny Modisette, including a $2,041/year
raise for bachelor’s degree teachers; a $2,141/year
raise for master’s degree teachers; and starting salary
of $39,800 for bachelor’s degree teachers and $41,800
for master’s degree teachers;
Relief for School Overcrowding -
Jeff Bailey, area assistant superintendent for the east
cluster, summarized the enrollment
growth data
for
Stinson
Elementary, recommending the rezoning of two apartment
complexes from Stinson to Miller. The matter was tabled and
followed
later with a special meeting held on March 24 at which
trustees voted to secure property for a school site and money
to construct
a new school to open in August, 2007, to relieve Stinson,
Boggess and Miller elementary schools. As a result, no
students will be rezoned from Stinson this fall;
Bilingual Program -
Heard an update on
the Bilingual/ESOL Program provided by several staff
members;
Budget Report -
Richard Matkin, associate superintendent for business
services, presented a 2006-07 budget report;
Policies - Approved on first reading TASB Policy Update
77; and
Consent Agenda - Approved all Consent Agenda items.
Trustees will meet again on
Tuesday, April 4. View the April agenda, which includes links
