Top Story Plano ISD's First Elementary School Built Anew In 1953, "Plano Elementary School" (later named for educator Aline Mendenhall) opened as the district's first standalone campus for Plano's youngest learners. Nearly 60 years later, the school has been completely rebuilt with funds from the 2008 bond program on the school's original site between 18th and 19th Streets in Historic Downtown Plano. Although the building is new, the school's tradition of providing an excellent education for all students is the same. Other News Back-to-School Open Houses Plano ISD's secondary schools (grades 6-12) will host back-to-school open houses on designated evenings in upcoming weeks. Please note that the open house date for high schools has been changed to Sept. 13. Find more information and other open house dates on our website. United Way Donation to Expand AVID Program to Three Elementary Schools The successful AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program that has been implemented in Plano ISD secondary schools will expand to three elementary schools this year, thanks to funding from United Way. Students Welcomed Back to School Approximately 55,000 students returned to classrooms on Monday, August 22, excited about starting a new school year. Trustees Set to Reschedule 2011-12 Bad Weather Make-Up Days The school board is scheduled to vote at its September 6 regular meeting to revise the 2011-12 Plano ISD District Calendar by rescheduling the two bad weather make-up days.
