Students Fair Well in Elementary District, Regional Science Events

February 28, 2005

Thousands of students participated recently in Plano ISD's Elementary District Science Fair and in the North Dallas Elementary Regional Science Fair. Hundreds of individual and school-level trophies were awarded at the fairs, including school high point and participation honors. At the regional fair, Plano ISD students were well represented, capturing 16 first place awards.

Plano ISD District Elementary Fair

The 2005 Elementary District Science Fair was held Saturday, February 12, at Renner Middle School. This year 5,510 elementary and sixth grade science students participated in Building Science Fairs, and 266 projects representing 301 students competed at the District Fair.

Ginger Britain, elementary science coordinator, reported that prizes given at the District Fair included trophies for all place winners at each grade level in the categories of Life, Earth, and Physical science. Neck medallions were given for honorable mention places.

District Science Fair Winners (95k) 48-pages

Grand Prize trophies were awarded to lower elementary (grades 1-3), upper elementary (grades 4-5) and for grade 6. A school high-point trophy was given to Mitchell Elementary School and Frankford Middle School for earning the highest number of points for student winners from their buildings at the District Fair. A second school high-point trophy was given to the Hickey Elementary School and Frankford Middle School for the highest percentage of building entries in a Building Science Fair.

Schools with the highest number of entries included:

  • Hickey Elementary - 58.98%
  • Mendenhall Elementary - 55.81%
  • Brinker Elementary - 44.82%
  • Frankford Middle School - 23.44%
  • Murphy Middle School - 13.08%
  • Wilson Middle School - 10.88%

North Dallas Regional Elementary Fair

The fifteenth annual North Dallas Elementary Regional Science Fair was held February 15 and 16 at Plano Centre. Each school’s grand prize winners entered their projects in the fair. Students from Allen ISD, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Garland ISD, Mesquite ISD, Plano ISD and Richardson ISD elementary and sixth grade science students competed for trophies and medallions.

Regional Science Fair Winners (10k)

“Our school district was well represented with 67 students (60 projects) receiving awards,” noted Ginger Britain, elementary science coordinator. “In grades one through six, our students won 16 first place trophies, 16 second place trophies, 11 third place trophies and 17 honorable mention medallions.
