Students
Participate in PISD's
First Elementary History
Fair
April 21, 2005
Plano ISD elementary students made history this month, as they participated
in the school district's first-ever elementary history
fair. The Plano ISD District Elementary History Fair
was held on Saturday, April 9.
About the History Fair
"It has been an exciting
time for students who participated in both the campus
and district fairs," noted Phyllis Stoup, elementary
social studies coordinator. "The History Fair provides
students a worthwhile learning experience in studying
history and it is fun at the same time. Sharing knowledge
is exciting and challenging, and
projects entered in the fair this year prove that
we have some budding young historians!"
The purpose of the History Fair is to focus and stimulate
interest in history beyond the school day. Students
have the opportunity to apply the many skills they
are learning in various academic subjects. A History
Fair cuts across every area of curriculum. It recognizes
and commends youthful talent and hobby pursuits.
Hopefully, this experience has stimulated public
interest in the historic abilities of our PISD students.
The research projects were based on the theme: Communication in History:
The Key to Understanding. The word “communication” can
be applied to a range of historical settings. The term
brings to mind the exchange of thoughts or information
through speech, signals, writing,
or behavior. Communication is the art of using words
effectively to impart information. Students had to
consider the ways communication
links ideas and opens doors for conversation throughout
history. Projects were entered in the following time
periods: Earliest to 1700; 1700 to 1800; 1800 to 1900;
and 1900 to Present.
Projects submitted for judging had to be the student’s own
work and researched during the current school year. Up to four students
could create a display and research a topic together. Each project
had to include research and a narrative telling how the research was
conducted. At the district fair, at least two judges interviewed each
student asking questions about their display and the research.
"We are very grateful to the Plano Chapter of Sons of the American
Revolution representatives of the Heritage Farmstead
Museum, Plano ISD curriculum coordinators and curriculum
specialists as well as community
volunteers who helped judge the History Fair," said
Ms. Stoup. "Many teachers and principals worked throughout
the day to see that the fair ran smoothly. An awards
assembly concluded the events, with
winning projects receiving trophies or medals."
