Three ‘Key
Schools’ Identified
for District Initiative to Help
Close the Achievement Gap
March 21, 2005
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto provided an update to school
trustees at their March 15 work session regarding the district's “Key
Schools." The new district initiative identifies
three campuses - Huffman, Rasor and Weatherford elementary
schools - for participation.
Dr. Otto reported that
the three campuses were
selected based upon such factors as student mobility,
multifamily housing and economically disadvantaged
students. He noted that central office
administrators and school principals
have conducted an initial organizational meeting, and
that principals at the three schools are currently
meeting with their leadership teams to discuss program
objectives. Patty Meyer, west cluster area assistant
superintendent, is leading the effort.
The key schools
will be looking at possible interventions in the areas
of curriculum, staffing and staff training, technology,
communication and policies while also considering
any recommendations from the district’s
Summit Response Teams addressing closing the achievement
gap.
Further reports to the
board are planned for April, with decisions for implementation
in May.
