Middle
School Captures National NJHS 'DifferenceMaker Award'
April 22, 2005
The Schimelpfenig Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)
has been selected as one of four NJHS chapters in the United States
to receive the 2005 “DifferenceMaker Award” presented
by the National Association of Secondary School Principals during
National Student Leadership Week.
A panel of judges from several service
organizations, including America’s Promise, the Corporation
for National and Community Service, and others judged the NJHS award
entries.

The 120 Schimelpfenig NJHS members have collectively provided
more than 4,000 hours of community service. Programs
include school beautification and recycling, 9/11 committee to honor
police/firefighters,
toy drives for local nonprofit organizations, care
packages for soldiers, teacher birthday and appreciation committees,
Taiwan pen pal exchange
and hosting school open house tours.
Under Schimelpfenig’s lead,
the 12 NJHS chapters in Plano teamed up to form a committee that would
answer directly to the City of Plano mayor’s office for volunteer
requests. Two joint projects are already planned for next year, with
all schools participating.
Jennifer Goebel serves as Schimelpfenig’s
NJHS president. Teacher and NJHS co-sponsors are Laura Mullen, former
Schimelpfenig student, and Deborah Johnston, whose children attended
Schimelpfenig.
