Plano Schools Raise $40,000
for Blood Cancer Research

May 9, 2005

This spring, several Plano schools joined the fight against cancer with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, collecting more than $40,000 through the annual Pennies for Patients program. For three weeks, schools like Renner Middle School - which topped the list of contributors at nearly $9,000 - encouraged students to collect spare change to help North Texas families affected by blood cancers.

Among other top fundraisers were Robinson, Frankford and Rice middle schools, which each collected approximately $5,000, and Skaggs Elementary School, which contributed nearly $4,000. Carpenter, Hendrick, Bowman and Murphy middle schools also generously contributed to the program, as did the following elementary schools: Hightower, Harrington, Sigler, Rasor, Shepard, Haggar, Thomas and Huffman.

Schools rallied behind Rice Middle School Teacher Jenny Scott, who lost her daughter Allie to leukemia in September 2004 at the age of nine months and now helps coordinate the Pennies program.

Robinson Middle School PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) students (pictured) kicked off the Pennies For Patients Campaign on April 4. For two weeks, students, faculty and staff brought spare pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to school during their 4th period class. This spare change, as well as, a few checks and several dollars added up quickly. At the end of the two-week collection, Robinson had collected $5,571.51.

Classes competed against each other to win an Olive Garden catered luncheon. Robinson’s winning class, Mrs. Renu Devi’s sixth grade Study Skills class, collected an average of $51.81 per student. Their second place class, Mr. Dusty Tanner’s seventh grade Science class, collected a total of $880.87.

This spare change will help to save the lives of people touched by blood-related cancers. Funds raised through this program support the Society’s mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
