Saigling
Elementary Student Wins Mockingbird Poetry Contest
March 18, 2005
Darien Lee, a fifth grade student at Saigling Elementary, won first
place in the Mockingbird Chapter Poetry Society of
Texas 34th Annual Collin County Poetry Contest.
Darien's
poem, "A
Tree is Born",
was recognized for Literary Creativity.
A Tree is Born
by Darien Lee
Tree branches flow like water,
Ever flexible in the calm breeze.
Leathery leaves cling fearfully
To the soft brown bark.
Roots tunnel deep,
From terror of the bright sun.
The trunk sways gently
Hugging the scared boughs.
A sudden loud roar appears,
And a whirling blade defeats the mighty trunk.
A thud so powerful
Rocks the Earth as if crying out in pain.
The branches are cut,
To become future baskets.
But as it is dragged away,
A tiny seed falls on the moist soil.
When a tree is felled, a tiny acorn takes its place.
A new willow tree is born.
