Saigling
Elementary Students
Set, Achieve Goals to Improve
May 9, 2005
They Took the Challenge!
“We did it!” These 3rd, 4th, & 5th
grade students from Saigling Elementary achieved their goals. Mrs.
Reynolds, the
school counselor, wanted her students to experience
what it was like to pursue and achieve a goal.
The purpose for her guidance lessons on setting goals was not only
for students to learn how to determine a need, develop a plan, and
implement the steps for achieving a goal; but to actually go through
the process.
She wanted students to realize they could truly be responsible
for making changes and improvements in school related
areas such as academics, citizenship, or organizational strategies
(including study
skills and time management techniques).
Mrs. Reynolds challenged the students to set a goal in an area they
believed they needed to improve. Forms stating the intended goal were
submitted to the counselor. Both parents and teachers signed the form
showing the goal was reasonable for the student. Classroom teachers
helped with the monitoring of each student’s progress. Any student
who was willing to set a goal was acknowledged for having the courage
to try.
About 65% of the students who submitted their goals achieved them.
Several others got very close and received recognition for their hard
work and effort.
However, Mrs. Reynolds stated the best part of the
results was watching the confidence of the students
rise as each successful step brought them closer to their goal and
the realization that they
do have the ability to make changes and improvements
in their own lives.
