Elementary
Schools to Implement Standardized Dress in 2005-06
February 7, 2005
School trustees at their February 1 meeting heard an update regarding
three elementary schools' plans to implement standardized
dress on their campuses during the 2005-06 school year.
Karla
Oliver, executive director for government and community
relations, provided the report to trustees, reminding
the board and audience that the topic of standardized
dress for a few schools was discussed at the November
16, 2004, board work session.
Ms. Oliver indicated that district policy does allow campuses
to implement standardized dress based on certain
criteria. The proposal being submitted for discussion
would be to waive the
current policy and allow three elementary schools (one
per cluster) to implement a standardized dress program.
Area Assistant Superintendents Jeff Bailey, Patty Meyer and Tom
Salmon indicated that the elementary schools
interested in implementing such a program are:
Each of these schools has conducted meetings
with campus staff members and PTAs
and sent a letter
to their school communities to enlist their support.
They
stressed that the program is strictly voluntary on
the part of parents and students. Direction was given
to further research the specifics of policy and program
recommendations.
