95%
of PISD Students Meet
TAKS Mathematics Standards
April 29, 2005
Fifth grade math TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)
scores indicate that Plano ISD students are deepening their understanding
of mathematics, according to Plano ISD Director of Assessment and
Accountability James Ashby, who reports that an outstanding 95 percent
of Plano ISD fifth grade students met the TAKS standard. “This
percent is the same rate achieved in 2004,” said Mr. Ashby. “However,
the criterion for meeting the standard increased in 2005. Therefore,
fifth grade students performed exceptionally well against a more difficult
standard.”
The percent of Plano ISD students achieving Commended status on the
exam increased four percent from last year. Commended is the highest
mark a student can receive on the exam. It is accomplished by answering
90 percent of the 44-item test correctly. Some 59 percent of PISD
students were Commended on the 2005 exam, up from 55 percent in 2004
and much higher than the 30 percent of Commended students statewide.
“
The Met Standard and Commended rates are an indicator
that math students in Plano ISD are effective problem
solvers, possess strong quantitative reasoning skills
and have deep algebraic reasoning skills,” noted
Mr. Ashby. “Such skills develop in a rich mathematical
environment that is fostered by a coherent curriculum
and sound instructional techniques.”
He noted that teachers are very busy working with
the five percent of students who did not meet the
standard. These students will test again on May 17.
Many of these students missed meeting the state standard
by one or two questions.
“It is very reasonable to believe that the concentrated efforts
of the teachers of these students will dramatically reduce the five
percent of students not meeting standard to just a few students,” said
Mr. Ashby. A third test is scheduled for June 28 for students who
may not make the standard in May.
