TAKS
Reading Scores Show PISD 3rd and 5th Grade Students'
Remarkable Depth of Knowledge
March 21, 2005
Third and fifth grade students have shown remarkable depth of knowledge
in reading on the recently administered Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills (TAKS) exams.
James Ashby, director of assessment and accountability,
and Dr. Christie Duke, director of reading and language
arts, report that, while the Met Standard rate has remained at a very
high level
(97% for 3rd grade and 92% for 5th grade), the most
impressive results are found in the high percent of Plano ISD students
who were commended
on the exams – 58% of third grade students and 47% of fifth
grade students.
A student receives commended status when he/she answers more than
90% of the items correctly. Commended status is reached only when
the student can demonstrate mastery of the highest levels of reading
skills. Impressively, despite having one of the highest commended
rates in the region last year in third grade (48%), Plano ISD was
able to increase that rate by 10% this year. The 2005 fifth grade
commended rate remained nearly the same as last year’s rate.
The results are a direct effect of two goals in Plano ISD’s
reading program. First, the results show that Plano teachers are highly
successful in their employment of intervention strategies for students
who struggle in reading. Second, the Plano ISD reading program is
successfully developing good readers into exceptional readers. As
intervention strategies and in-depth teaching increases in fourth
and fifth grade classrooms, fifth grade reading scores should reach
the heights of the third grade scores.
