Teachers Benefit from Mexico
Sister City Exchange

March 21, 2005

Julia Robin, Plano West Senior High School ESL teacher, and Kathleen Carnahan, Hendrick Middle School Spanish teacher, were recently immersed in a Plano Sister Cities International exchange with teachers in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The pair taught English to students from March 6 through 12 in secondary schools and fielded questions of students and teachers about the United States, Texas and Plano.

Plans are underway to receive two teachers from San Pedro Garza Garcia in Plano ISD this spring to continue the teacher exchange, which capitalizes on the educational strengths of both cities. Julia Robin, who has been teaching for four years, holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and English. She says that many of her students call Mexico “home.” Katy Carnahan, a first-year teacher who holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish said that this was her first trip to Mexico. She looks forward to sharing her personal experiences with students.
