Education
Foundation, School Nurse and School Business Partner
Capture 2005 Volunteer Awards
April 19, 2005
Congratulations to the Plano ISD Education Foundation, Huffman
Elementary School Nurse Sandra McKenzie and Medical
Center of Plano who were named 2005 Volunteers
of the Year at the 25th Annual Collin County Volunteer
of the Year Award Luncheon held on Tuesday, April 19,
at Plano Centre.
"Celebrating 25 Years of Volunteer Recognition" was the theme for
the annual luncheon
program, emceed by Judy Drotman, event chair
and former Plano ISD school trustee. The program included
recognition of award nominees and winners, sponsor
recognitions and remarks by guest speaker John Criswell,
former Dallas television news anchor and founder of
several nonprofit volunteer organizations, including
the Deaf Action Center.
Plano ISD Education Foundation
The Plano ISD Education Foundation was awarded 2005 Volunteer of
the Year in the "education
group" category.
The mission of the Foundation,
a nonprofit 501c3(b) organization, is to support quality
education for Plano ISD students by generating and
channeling private and corporate resources toward
areas of identified need, increasing community involvement
and support, and encouraging open communication between
the community and our schools.
The purpose of the Foundation is to help ensure that
Plano ISD remains an excellent school district. Visit
the Foundation website for more information.

Sandra McKenzie, RN
Nurse McKenzie was among 11 nominees in the "education
individual" category, and the winner of the 2005 Volunteer of
the Year award. No stranger to awards, Nurse Sandra McKenzie, Huffman
Elementary School, has been celebrated this year by
the Plano ISD Multi-ethnic Committee, which presented
her with its annual Diversity
Leadership Award.
She has also been
honored this school year at the Texas School Health
Association’s
annual conference for her unique anti-germs program, “Princess
Nurse Says: Don’t Touch Your Face.” The program recently
captured a $1,500 award from the Texas Department of
Health and Texas Health Foundation.

Nurse Sandra McKenzie (second from

Petroff, RNC, coordinator of Plano ISD health services,
and Sharon Gunn-Town, Huffman Elementary School
principal.
Nurse
McKenzie has most definitely captured the
hearts of the students and staff at her school, where
she is known as "Princess
Nurse." There,
she brings love, enthusiasm, acceptance and fun to
the school’s
culturally rich student population.
Through her work with “Huffman Friends,” an
outreach program for students who are economically
disadvantaged, Nurse McKenzie has developed partnerships with the
school’s
PTA, staff, Parr Library, Haverly Park Apartments,
Haverly Park “Cares
Team,” St.
Andrews United Methodist Church, cub scouts and many
families.
Nurse McKenzie has coordinated several events conducted at the Haverly
Park Apartments, including a school registration night,
story times each Thursday evening, and a weekly summer “Story & Sandwich” event.
The summer program helped the Huffman Friends forge
bonds with students to ease the transition into their
new school.
Medical Center of Plano
Medical
Center of Plano, nominated by Memorial Elementary School,
was one of three "large business" nominees and the winner
of the 2005 Volunteer of the Year award.
Among its
numerous community outreach programs, Medical Center
of Plano has served for approximately 20 years as the major
business partner of Memorial Elementary School.
Memorial Elementary School Principal Louise W. Davis
and her staff nominated Medical Center of Plano for
the 2005 Volunteer of the Year award. Pictured: Mary
