Art Awards
East Student Wins Congressional Art Competition
Congressman
Sam Johnson and the Third District of Texas selected Kate Wignall's
work as the winner of the "Congressional Art Competition:
An Artistic Discovery." The winning entries from each participating
Member's district-wide contests are displayed in a special exhibition
located in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol. Kate, her chaperone,
and teacher will received free round trip airline tickets to fly
to Washington D.C. and attend the exhibit's national unveiling
and ribbon cutting ceremony June 28.
Mark Sorrentino was selected as second place winner and Megan
Bernhart as third place winner. First, second, and third place
winners will receive Savings Bonds and be honored at a reception
with Sam Johnson on May 18. Art teacher is Deborah R. Moore.
Art Awardees to be Honored in Washington, D.C.
Plano ISD has had several students that have recently received
awards from The Scholastic Awards. Student from Plano East Senior
High School and Plano West Senior High School received awards from
the Region-at-Large program.
The following students received a Gold Key and then advanced to
compete at the national-level of adjudication. These works were
among 700 works that were awarded a Gold key from approximately
5,000 submissions to the Region-at-Large program of the Scholastic
Art Awards and among 20,000 works submitted from young artists
across America.

Two students received Portfolio Silver Awards at the national
level. Andy's and Kate's bodies of work were among 322 out of
9,000 portfolios chosen for recognition. The students, family and
art
teacher are invited to the awards presentation that will be at
Carnegie Hall on June 8 and hands on workshops and artist studio
tours on June 9.
Celebration 2006 continues in Washington D.C., where the 2006
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Student Exhibition
at the Corcoran Gallery of Art hosts a private reception on June
30 for the national awards winners. The student exhibition will
be on display from July 1 through August 6.

Citizen Bee -
First Place Winner Advances to State
Harsh Vardhan, Plano West Senior High, is the first place winner
of the Regional Citizen Bee, which was held on Saturday, April 8,
at Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson. Zein Jivani from
Plano East Sr. High placed fifth in the competition. Harsh will advance
to the state competition to be held on May 13 in Austin. Also participating
from Plano ISD were Ashley Meyers, Matt Evans and Jeff Kline.
The Region 10 Metroplex Regional Citizen Bee promotes civic understanding,
community pride, and personal responsibility through an academic competition
based on political and cultural history, geography, economics and
current events. Students gain a greater understanding of American
Heritage and the American political system, while learning about the
issues that currently face our country.
Economics Challenge -
State Title
Goes to East
Following are results of the State Regional Economics Challenge held
in Houston on Tuesday, April 11.
Plano East Sr. High won first place in the Adam Smith competition
and will participate in the West-Multi-State Regional competition.
Members of the team are Erik Feng, Jeff Nanney, Aleck Zhou, and Karan
Arakotaram. The competition was held on April 24 in Los Angeles, CA.
Third place winners from Plano East went to the David Ricardo team
of Danielle Shirley, Anthony Lam, Brooke Prouty and Allison Josal.

The sponsor of the Plano East team is Julie Meek.
The National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) announced the sixth
annual NCEE National Economics Challenge sponsored
by The Goldman Sachs Foundation. In 2006, there will be 35 state holding
competitions.
Students currently enrolled in an economics course
may compete in one of two divisions. First place teams from each division
in each
state will advance to compete in one of four regional
contests. Divisional finalist teams from each region will receive
an all-expense paid trip
to compete for the national championship title in New
York City on May 20-22, 2006. The NCEE National Economics Challenge
is the only
national competition to foster interest among high
school students in economics by recognizing their achievements and
offering a fun
and competitive way to showcase their knowledge.
The NCEE/Goldman Sachs Foundation National Economics Challenge provides
the excitement of an athletic competition to academic
excellence. In each competition teams of students answer
rigorous questions on
microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics.
The most exciting round of the competition is the final
round conducted in
an oral quiz-bowl format. Only the top two teams from
the first three rounds compete in the final round.
History Fair -
Twenty-four Students Advance to State
Twenty-four Plano ISD students, who captured 1st and 2nd place awards
at the Regional History Fair held on February 18 at
Collin County Community College, will advance to the
state competition to be held on Saturday, April 29,
at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin.

Students ‘Perform’ at
College Bowl
On Saturday,
March 25, 163 Advanced Placement Music Theory students
from 11 high schools participated
in the 8th Annual Practice AP Test and Music Theory “College
Bowl” sponsored by AP Strategies, Inc., and
the O’Donnell Foundation at Duncanville High
School.
Events include adding musical harmonizations to written melodies
or bass lines; sight-singing unknown tunes, dictation of melody and
harmony played a limited number of times, identification of listening
examples, and a test of music theory fundamentals. Each event is based
on a portion of the Advanced Placement Test in Music Theory that many
of these students will take later this spring.
Plano Senior High School earned second place in the
overall team competition. The Plano West Senior High
School and Plano East Senior High School teams placed
fifth and sixth, respectively.

PSHS Team Breaks State Record
The Plano ISD Speech teams returned victorious from their Texas Forensic
Association State competition.
With 209 schools participating, Plano Senior High School won third
place sweepstakes and received an award for 55 qualifications for
the state tournament. That is the highest number of qualifications
ever received by any school in the history of TFA and broke Plano
Sr.'s own record of 53.
Plano West Senior High School won fourth place sweepstakes and received
an award for being 8th in state for the number of qualifers.
For Plano Senior High School, 22 of the 30 students attending advanced
to outrounds and 14 of those advanced to semi's. Additionally, Elizabeth
Frankel, Elizabeth Tsai and Bilal Ahmad made it to finals of congress
and Ace Heckathorn won 1st place in Dramatic Interp, making him a
state champion in one of the 10 championship qualifying categories.
Additionally, four students advanced to outrounds in consolation events.
For Plano West Senior High School, the following students were awarded
with 1st place awards: Impromptu Speaking for Marin Mueller, 2nd place
in Extemporaneous Speaking for Tex Dawson, 2nd place in Student Congress
for Chad Zidow, and Presiding Officer recognition for Chad Zidow.
Zan Sadiq was in Finals of Student Congress. The following students
were in Semi Finals of their events: Ricky Bennick in Dramatic Interpretation,
Monica Smith in Oratory, Travis Williams in Oratory, Chad Zidow, Chelsea
Goldstein, and Kedar Bhatia in Extemporaneous Speaking.
For Plano East Senior High School, Nauder Namaky advanced to semifinals
in Student Congress – House and Uma Shah, Bahar Dave, Paankhuri
Gupta were Semifinalists in Impromptu Speaking.
Vines High School had students advancing to semifinals in oratory;
Mario Nguyen. Advancing to semifinals in Impromptu
was Aaron Chapman and Thao Le. Advancing to quarterfinals
in Prose were Eva Sikes and
Stefany Cambra. And Thao Le received 5th place in speaker
points for Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
