'Chemist
Mom' Shares Expertise with Early Childhood Teachers
January 20, 2006
A
chemist and mother of twins at Beaty Early Childhood School, recently
engaged Beaty teachers in fun and meaningful science demonstrations
which
will help their young learners become science investigators.
Sofia Hohnholt, now a stay-at-home
mom, has a bachelor's degree in environmental science
from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and a master's
degree in chemistry from Texas Tech University.
In addition to
teaching gifted and talented
elementary
classes, Mrs. Hohnholt worked as a research scientist at Applied
Biosystems.
At the school, she
demonstrated some fun, hands-on stations for the staff to practice
experiments that may eventually be shared with the school's three-
and four-year-old students.
They tried:
- Making White Glue from Milk
- Dancing Raisins
- Dancing Quarters
- Skewering a Balloon
and more!
"We
love working with our talented parents!," said
Principal Susie Vaughan, pictured (right) with Ms. Hohnholt.
Beaty is one of Plano ISD's three award-winning early childhood
schools, which serve prekindergarten students. The other two schools
are Barron and Pearson.
