Children's Book Week

November 1 , 2005

Child ReadingElementary schools across the district are planning "Children's Book Week" activities for November 13-19.

During this annual event, our elementary schools will help foster a love and proficiency for reading in children while promoting the importance of parental involvement in that process.

Several activities are being planned by our librarians and teachers. Read about them on this site, and view related links.

Bethany Elementary School

Each grade level will have a special guest reader.  Kindergarten, first grade and second grade students will hear from Plano's recycling education coordinator, Glenna Brown, who will read Johnny and the Old Oak Tree.   The school's literacy specialist, counselor, or principal will read the bluebonnet nominee, Circle Unbroken to the third, fourth and fifth grade students.

Christie Elementary

Activities are planned for the entire week at Christie Elementary.  Daily themes are: Monday - "Books Are Our 'Beary' Good Friends," bring a stuffed bear to school; Tuesday - "New Arrival Party," come for a preview of all new books in the library; Wednesday - "Brighten Your Day With a Good Book ," wear sunglasses; Thursday - "Hats Off to Reading ," wear crazy hats; and Friday - "Christie Cubs Care About Books," wear Christie Spirit clothing.

Haun Elementary School

The students and staff from Haun Elementary School look forward to each morning's announcements to discover where "Ms. Frazzle" had traveled the night before.  They then try to guess the fairy tale or nursery rhyme place she had been.

Huffman Elementary School

Activities are planned for the entire week at Huffman Elementary.  Daily themes are: Monday - "Reading Is Our Business," wear a tie or scarf; Tuesday - "Jog Into Reading," wear jogging suits or sweats; Wednesday - "Hats Off to Reading," wear hats; Thursday - "Read Your Socks Off," wear crazy socks; and Friday - "Drop Everything and Read," everyone reads quietly for 10 to 15 minutes.  On Thursday, November 10, a Huffman will be hosting a story time for 4 year olds.

McCall Elementary School

Principal Cathy Taylor will start the week off by wearing a frog costume emphasizing the theme for the week, "Leap Into Literature."  On Thursday, Mrs. Nellie McCall will read to fourth grade students and that evening is "Sleep Tight Story Night" where students come dressed in slippers and jammies to hear high school student volunteers read bedtime stories. Daily dress-up themes are: Monday - "Books Help You Grow," wear green; Tuesday - "Warm Up to a Winning Book," wear jogging suits or sweats; Wednesday - "Book Character Dress Up Day," dress like your favorite character from a book; Thursday - "Slip Into a Super Book," wear slippers; and Friday - "Let a Good Book Sneak Up on You," wear your sneakers.

Meadows Elementary School

Students will take part in Children's Book Week at Meadows Elementary by dressing up as their favorite book character on Thursday, November 17.

Mendenhall Elementary School

Florence Shapiro reading to studentsMendenhall Elementary is proud to present a week full of literacy.  Guest readers will visit throughout the week to share their favorite books with students. These role models from the community will be sure to leave a lasting impression on the children.

Pearson Early Childhood School

Teachers will read their favorite books during storytime, and all students will receive special stickers. Also, there will be a November 15 visit by local author Anastasia Suen. On November 17, a "Book Shower" display will feature new books for the school year and will include refreshments and prizes.

Shepard Elementary School

Shepard Elementary will have "Dress As Your Favorite Book Character Day" on Friday, November 18. Teachers and students will be dressed very creatively!

Weatherford Elementary School

Each day during Children's Book Week there will be a book drawing during the morning announcements for each grade level. On Tuesday, third grade girls will enjoy an American Girl tea & lunch.  Plans for Wednesday include the dress-up theme "Warm-up to a Good Book." Children will be encouraged to wear warm-up suits. Also on Wednesday, students will enjoy a "read-in" during selected times in each grade level. On Thursday, all fifth grade students will enjoy a visit by a Plano Public Librarian. A "Harry Potter" breakfast will be held on Friday morning.

Wyatt Elementary School

In celebration of National Children’s Book Week Wyatt Elementary started a program called, “Trek to the Outback.” that encourages the children to add up their reading minutes each night. Each minute that a child read counted as a mile. The goal was to get enough minutes/miles to allow Wally the Wallaroo to reach Australia. The grade level that got the most minutes received an extra recess, and if the whole school met their reading goal Mrs. Moilanen would kiss a lizard.
