Cox
Building / Historic
Classroom Dedication March 1
February 27, 2006
The
Grand Opening for the newly-renovated Cox Building, 1517
Avenue H, will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1. Also
to be unveiled is the Historic Classroom inside the building.
Featured at this event will be representatives from Plano ISD,
the City
of Plano and members of the Historical
Classroom Committee.
During a fall, 2005, joint meeting of governmental entities, members
of the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, city council, chamber of commerce,
community college, county commissioners and state elected officials
heard a status report regarding the renovation of Plano ISD’s
Cox Building, the original K-12 school located on Avenue H in Historic
Downtown Plano.
Richard Matkin, associate superintendent for business services,
and Karla Oliver, executive director for government and community
relations, reported that a showcase of the three-floor brick structure
will be an historic classroom located near the main entry in the
former office of the superintendent of schools.
“The classroom will include an exhibit and display space,
artifacts, period light fixtures and the original flooring, door
and door frame,” reported Ms. Oliver, who has co-chaired
a committee to oversee the classroom design with Rutledge Haggard,
Plano ISD Education Foundation board member and former school board
president, whose family was among Plano’s earliest settlers.
Tenants
of the renovated building will include City of Plano Creative Arts
on the first floor and some Plano ISD offices of human resources,
student services and professional development departments on the
second floor, and deaf education and professional development on
the third floor. The Cox Building is neighbored on the south by
the former school district gymnasium, now home to the Courtyard
Theater.
