eSchool
Provides Plano ISD Students Online Course Option
April 25, 2006
Plano
ISD initiated eSchool in
early 2001 with the objective of offering high school students
in grades
9-12 with an online course option, to maximize the use of instructional
technology and to reach out to students out of district, including
those who are home schooled.
eSchool enables students to take high school courses online, on
their own time, providing flexibility and connectivity to meet
their individual needs.
Master
Teachers
"The
primary strength of eSchool is a cadre of 80 experienced and well-trained
Plano ISD teachers who instruct, monitor and motivate
students as they work through course curriculum," noted Jean
Parmer, eSchool administrator. "eSchool students are also
supported by a complete system of technical services, including
online registration and help desk resources."
Students enroll in eSchool to enhance their high school experience
with additional courses, to graduate at an accelerated pace, as
a solution to scheduling difficulties on their home campus, or
because they need to recover credits for graduation.

Closing the Achievement Gap
eSchool is a leading example of how
Plano ISD is closing the achievement gap by allowing students flexibility
in scheduling
and providing
them with opportunities to participate in dual credit and
extended study programs. The eSchool program also supports the
district’s
completion rate by allowing students an additional option
for course credit recovery.
Since its inception, eSchool has served more than 5,000 high
school students in Texas, the United States and other countries
such as
East Africa and Saudi Arabia.
Students have a completion rate of 91 percent and an overall
passing rate of 98 percent. Student enrollment and success
rates have increased
from 180 students (2000-01) with 60 percent completion to
1,483 students with a completion rate of 91 percent (based
upon 2004-05
figures). The program faculty has grown from 12 to 80 teachers
over the five years of implementation.
