Teacher
Experiences Mexico through Fulbright-Hays Program
September 28, 2005
This summer, Janet Teng, Hightower Elementary School ESOL teacher,
was selected by the U.S. Department of Education to participate
in
the 2005
Fulbright-Hays
Seminar
Abroad
Program.
Together
with 15 fellow educators chosen from across the nation, she spent
five weeks in Mexico. "What an amazing learning
experience," reflects Ms. Teng. Topics explored were related
to the effects of globalization and modernization on traditional
values in Mexico. Also examined were
the diverse history, architecture, ethnography, religion, environment
and culture."
Ms. Teng visited many communities, schools, museums,
markets, churches and archaeological sites. She had the honor of
meeting with teachers, scholars and experts in these areas.
"What
was striking to me was to realize what a beautiful country Mexico
is, with such a rich and diverse culture," commented Ms. Teng. "In
particular, visiting several indigenous communities gave me a deeper
understanding
of
the diversity in Mexico. This unusual learning experience has already
helped me teach and serve my ESL students and their families in
a more informed way."
