Provides Texas Schools
$100,000 in Hurricane

National Education Association (NEA) President Reg Weaver has
presented $100,000 in direct aid from the NEA Hurricane Katrina
Relief Fund to Texas students, teachers, and school employees who
have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The aid was given to the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA)
to help displaced students who are in need of
school supplies, textbooks and other materials and to accommodate
the increased enrollment. Texas schools have enrolled more than
60,000
displaced students.
Mary Deperi, Plano Education Association President, reports that
Plano ISD has enrolled more than 600 students who are victims of
Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Deperi suggests that public school employees
and public schools apply for the grants that are available to assist
displaced children who need school supplies, textbooks and personal
needs such as clothing.
According to Ms. Deperi, application forms
were sent by e-mail to all TSTA/PEA/NEA members. Applications
are also available by calling the toll-free NEA Hurricane Katrina

Texas residents may send their applications to TSTA, 316 West
12th Street, Austin, TX 78701, ATTN: Roger Montgomery.
NEA launched a massive hurricane relief plan by establishing a
$1 million fund to assist public school employees who have been
directly impacted by the hurricane as well as public school employees
in Texas and other states who want to help students who have been
impacted by the hurricane.
