September 29, 2005

National Education Association (NEA) President Reg Weaver has presented $100,000 in direct aid from the NEA Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to Texas students, teachers, and school employees who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The aid was given to the Texas State Teachers Association (TSTA) to help displaced students who are in need of school supplies, textbooks and other materials and to accommodate the increased enrollment. Texas schools have enrolled more than 60,000 displaced students.

Mary Deperi, Plano Education Association President, reports that Plano ISD has enrolled more than 600 students who are victims of Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Deperi suggests that public school employees and public schools apply for the grants that are available to assist displaced children who need school supplies, textbooks and personal needs such as clothing.

Applications are also available by calling the toll-free NEA Hurricane Katrina Helpline at )866) 247-2239 or you may e-mail your request to katrinarelief@nea.org.
