Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

Students receiving new school suppliesMost Plano schools are hosting relief efforts for Katrina evacuees, like Bria and Kyra, who received new school supplies through the School Supply Project.

 

Elementary Schools

Aldridge Elementary School

The Aldridge PTA is proud to announce the presentation of a $1390.74 donation to the American Red Cross to aid in hurricane relief.  The brainchild of three fourth grade students, Kate Prindle, Anna Harris, and Michaela Caughey, the effort was dubbed, "Coins for Katrina."  We salute the efforts of these three girls, as well as the response from the entire student body. 

Bethany Elementary School

The Bethany community is invited to join a school-wide relief effort September 6-12. "Students Thinking of Other People" (STOP) students will be collecting cash donations in the carpool lines and during the lunch hour.

Beverly Elementary School

Kindergarten Teacher and StudentsBeverly Kindergarten Teacher Danielle Wranosky, U.S. Army, has been called to active duty to assist in the recovery efforts in New Orleans. Ms. Wranosky will be flying helicopter recovery operations in direct support of the federal relief effort. Brinker Elementary School

STOP (Students Thinking of Other People) students will be at both entrances to the school (gym and front door) on Wednesday and Thursday, September 7 and 8, for parents and/or students to drop off monetary donations. The group will accept checks made out to "Spirit of Texas Hurricane Relief Fund" or cash.

Carlisle Elementary School

Fifth grade STOP (Students Thinking of Others) sponsor teacher Mary Sue Brown reports that at Carlisle fifth grade 90-member STOP students, along with the help of parents and teachers, put together a relief project in collaboration with the North Texas Food Bank.

Carlisle is collecting bottled water; handheld snack items like granola bars, beef jerky, cheese/crackers; canned meals that are easy to open; protein type items; paper plates, cups/plastic utensils; paper towels/napkins; and baby wipes and disposable cleansing items.

The drive will continue through September 20, with items collected in the front of the building by the office or in commons area. We are going to Camp Classen the following week.

Centennial Elementary School

Students have raised $7,000 in the first week with the proceeds from a silicone bracelet sale for Hurricane Relief. The fundraiser will continue through 16.

Daffron Elementary School

"Dollars for Disaster" is currently underway, sponsored by Daffron S.T.O.P. (Students Thinking of Other People) students to be given to Red Cross or Salvation Army.

Dooley Elementary School

STOP (Students Thinking of People) invite parents, students and community members to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina by participating in the school's "Coins for Katrina" cash drive (coins, cash or checks (made payable to American Red Cross) from September 7-9, during the moring and afternoon carpool. Students may also bring donations to their classrooms or to the September 16 "back-to-school" picnic.

Supplies may be donated through each Dooley classroom, including: adult and children socks, baby care items, bedding items, medicine for children (cough syrup), underclothing (new for male, female, children), care bags (soaps, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand towels), coloring books/crayons, diaper wipes, deoderant, paper towels, duffle bags, backpacks, cots and air mattresses (no mattresses or furniture, please).

Harrington Elementary School

Music Specialist Valerie Bruce reports that the Student Council will host a monetary collection drive September 8-15 near the front office for the victims of Hurricane Katrina

Haun Elementary School

Haun students and staff are collecting monetary donations to be distributed through the American Red Cross. The drive will continue through September 16. More than $1,300 was collected the first morning.

Hedgcoxe Elementary School

Families, students and staff of Hedgcoxe will collect items from September 15-29 for the elementary age children of the displaced families in our area that are victims of Hurricane Katrina. The following items will be collected: toys and games, personal hygiene items, books and other items (no clothing). Items may be placed in the boxes located in the front of the school.

Hickey Elementary School

Hickey student collecting coinsThe ALL STAR students at Hickey are collecting coins to contribute to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Within five school days, the 436 students donated $3,102.19 in coins, bills and checks to the hurricane relief effort. Students were bringing coins from their piggy banks, giving their ice cream money and even bringing in checks from their families! Some students sought donations from the carpool line after school. One kindergarten student, Larry J Stanley, canvassed his neighbors for "caring coins" and brought in a container that was too heavy for the five year old to carry himself. The donations are going to the American Red Cross. As the Hickey All Star song says, "Hickey students work to make the world a better place."

Hightower Elementary School

Hightower’s Students Thinking of People (S.T.O.P.) is having a fund raising drive to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Donation buckets will be set up at the school entrances by the gym and the front office Tuesday, September 6, through Friday, September 9. According to Dinita Willmann, counselor, "This is a way to let our students help those affected by this disaster."

Huffman Elementary School

Principal Len Stevens reported that Huffman students and staff are conducting a coin collection as well as collecting clothing through STOP (Students Thinking of Peers) group and other necessities through Student Council.

Hunt Elementary School

Several collections boxes were set up throughout the school through September 16. The students and parents were asked to bring coins, dollars or checks for a "Pass the Hat" for the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. All students, parents, and staff members wore their favorite cap or hat all day at school for a $1.00 donation.

Jackson Student Council MembersJackson Elementary School

Jackson's Student Council has collected $3,000 through its "Coins for Katrina" hurricane victims. All coins will be donated directly to the American Red Cross. Student Council members helping in the effort are pictured (l-r) Jonathan Uyemura, Tyler Jacobs, Tanner Nordeen and Marie Levit. Sponsors are Susan McDonald and Jill Hall.

Mathews Elementary School

Mathews Elementary is collecting money. Empty 5-gallon water jugs will be located in the gym and the front office for donations. All proceeds will go directly to The Red Cross. The Red Cross requests cash only, although other items may be donated at several locations around the Metroplex.

Meadows Elementary School

Student Council is collecting "Coins for Katrina" during the week of Sept. 12-16. Parents, students, friends and family may donate in their child's classroom or in the office.

Memorial Elementary School

Memorial Elementary PTA is hosting a gently used/new clothing drive to benefit locally placed Katrina evacuees.  If your school has Katrina evacuees who could benefit from this drive or you would like to donate, please contact Amanda Trask, Memorial PTA President. 

Through the Student Council's "Powerful Pennies" campaign, plus a $1,000 donation by a Memorial family, students and staff collected nearly $1,200 for Katrina relief.

Mitchell Elementary School

Fifth grade students in STOP (Students Thinking of Other People) and STARS (Students Teaching About the Risks of Smoking) are collecting children's clothes and shoes and non-perishable foods at the school through Friday, Sept.9 before and after school in the car pool line and at the front doors of the school. The school is also collecting money to be given to the Red Cross, said Mary Kay Eastep, Mitchell Counselor.

Rose Mary Haggar Elementary School

R.M. Haggar Elementary School held a “Coins for Katrina” fundraising drive to raise money to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. During the week-long effort, R.M. Haggar students, families, and staff contributed $1343.58 for the American Red Cross Katrina fund. Robin Williams, R.M. Haggar principal, commented, “Haggar students care about the world around them, and we are proud of their commitment to help those in need.”

Saigling Elementary School

On September 6, Saigling Elementary School in Plano began a Hurricane Relief Fund drive which will continue until Sept. 16. Newly enrolling students from affected areas of Hurricane Katrina were welcomed by Saigling's PTA, who provided items such as muffins and complimentary school T-shirts. "Through various efforts such as the fund raising drive and other welcoming programs, Saigling students have shown they believe in their school motto: 'We Care, We Share, We Shine,'"said Sandy Clark, Saigling Community Outreach Chairman, who reported that students and staff raised more than $1,600. The EDS Credit Union counted the school's change at no charge.

Shepard Elementary School

S.T.O.P. (Students Thinking of Other People) will give up recess on September 21 and walk around the Wilson Track Field for a one time donation to help aid the Gulf Coast disaster. "With the help of relatives and friends, we hope to raise money to help those who have suffered a terrible tragedy," reported Gaby Gil, counselor. "Also, our community will be asked to donate clothes. Baskets will be placed at each grade level."

Sigler Elementary School

Student Council is leading a "Coins for Katrina" drive through September 16. Donations will be collected in the library.

Stinson Elementary School

The children at Stinson Elementary are bringing in the money from their piggy banks in an effort to make a difference in the lives of the people who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. "About $1,000 was collected the first morning of donations," reported Counselor Bryan Smith. Stinson will collect donations until Thursday, September 8. Stinson has partnered with Dallas National Bank, who will count the money and write the check to the American Red Cross. "The children at Stinson believe it is their role to help serve their community," said Mr. Smith.

Thomas Elementary School

Thomas Elementary School STOP (Students Thinking of Other People) students are collecting monetary donations which will be given to the American Red Cross. The donation drive will continue through September 14. According to Michele Taylor, principal intern, donations may be made in the front office.

Wells Elementary School

Supported by Cub Scout Pack 1256, Wells Elementary is hosting a stuffed animal drive from 1:00 to 3:00pm on Sunday, September 11, in front of the school. Donations of new or gently-loved animals are being accepted now at Wells during school hours. According to Donna Hartman, gifted specialist, the Wells fourth grade PACE students lead a drive to collect money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, collecting more than $1,300 to be donated to the Red Cross.

Wyatt Elementary School

  • Wyatt Student Council is collecting money to send to the American Red Cross. Send spare change to school, and we collect it for the American Red Cross. There will be collection containers at Wyatt until Friday, Sept. 9.
  • Wyatt families will participate in a garage sale to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Residence Inn at Dallas Park Central.   • K-WAM (Kids with a Mission) at Wyatt will assemble health kits for survivors on September 21. Donations of new supplies will be collected through September 19. Items needed are:
    • Hand towels (15”x25” up to 17”x27”)
    • Washcloths
    • Large comb (not pocket-sized)
    • Nail file or small fingernail clippers (no emery boards or large clippers)
    • Bath-size bar of soap
    • Large (full-size) tube of toothpaste
    • Individual adult toothbrush (must be in original wrapper)
    • Adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages
    • One-gallon clear plastic bags that can seal

Middle Schools

Bowman Middle School

The Bowman Student Council, PALS and NJHS will collect, through September 9, toiletry items to be delivered to the Salvation Army warehouse in Dallas on Saturday, September 10. "This is the first of hopefully several fundraisers to help with the relief effort," reported Principal Tonya Horton.

Carpenter Middle School

CMS has about $2,100 in leftover school supply pre-packs that were scheduled to be returned to the supplies vendor EPI. But now, with the possibility of receiving children and families displaced from Hurricane Katrina, the PTA will provide the supplies to children who are victims of the hurricane who enroll in the school. EPI discounted the remaining supplies, and the PTA donated a portion. That leaves the school approximately $1,500 short. Donations of about $20 will provide school supplies for a 6th, 7th and 8th grader. A donation of $10 will help provide binders and pencils. Donations may be made via check, payable to CMS PTA and NOTE: KATRINA SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE in the note section. Any additional donations the school receives will be used to purchase additional supplies for children placed in the school and other PISD schools. In addition, the Carpenter Middle School National Junior Honor Society and cheerleaders have begun collecting monetary donations to send to the victims of Katrina. In just two days, students and faculty have contributed $532 that will be sent to the American Red Cross. Thanks to all for your generosity. Collections will continue at least through the end of next week (Sept. 9).

Frankford Middle School

In this time of need for our fellow Americans, Frankford is very fortunate to have students and staff that have decided to pull together to help those citizens that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have several opportunities for donations during the next several weeks. Many advisory classes have joined together collecting water bottles, clothing, money and a variety of other items that will be donated to the American Red Cross. If you would like to make a donation, the National Junior Honor Society will collect money through Friday, September 17, during all three lunch periods, or you can drop a check by the front office. All checks should be written to the American Red Cross. There will be several other opportunities (ex: Student Council @ Sonic) for donations in the upcoming weeks.

Haggard Middle School

Students plan to “Donate A Dollar” to be given to the relief organizations supporting the hurricane victims. Students may donate money September 6-9 during their lunch period to aid the relief effort. Under the direction of Student Council Sponsor Gail Dean, students from the following organizations will lead the fundraising effort: National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Student Council, Peer Assistance & Leadership (PAL), and Students Taking Action Not Drugs (STAND) organizations.

Murphy Middle School

Starting Tuesday, September 6, the PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) class will collect money for hurricane relief. The money will be collected during 6th period. All money collected will go to the Red Cross as a community project. Checks are accepted and may be made out to the Red Cross. All donations are due by Friday, September 9. Renner Middle School

Several fund raising opportunities are underway to provide assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Monetary donations are being collected for the American Red Cross and the SPCA through the National Junior Honor Society, various advisory classes and staff members. Collection containers are located in the front office and in various classrooms throughout the building. In addition, the PALS are collecting clothes and household items. All collections will continue through next week.

Rice Middle School

September 7-16, the PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership) class will collect money for hurricane relief. The money will be collected during 6th period. All money collected will go to the Red Cross as a community project. Checks are accepted and may be made out to the Red Cross.

Schimelpfenig Middle School

The staff and students conducted a "fill the bucket" drive, collecting $10,000 which will be presented to The Salvation Army. "We will do more in the weeks to come, but feel that immediate cash is our first contribution," noted Jill Shafer, reading teacher. "We are collecting at the door to the school, at lunch in the cafeteria and after school. We have students from every group and organization in the school helping, from holding signs, to monitoring the buckets to counting the money. We also have a collection bucket, donated by Home Depot in the main office and in the staff lounge.

Wilson Middle School

The Wilson National Junior Honor Society is currently sponsoring a fund raising effort to provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Students have provided “piggy bank” loads of their change and small bill stashes of their savings for this important cause. The school will continue to collect money through Friday, September 9, to donate to the Salvation Army.

High Schools

Clark High School

“FFA’s Fill the Trailer” - Future Farmers of America will have a trailer set up in front of Clark, 523 Spring Creek Parkway, beginning September 6. Students, parents and community members are asked to donate items for hurricane victims – bottled water, canned goods (those that have pop-tops), bedding, clothing, personal hygiene items (toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, etc.), diapers and baby formula.

"Cougars Care: Beads of Hope” will collect money next week to help with hurricane relief efforts. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, collection tables will be located in the Clark HS cafeteria and will be manned by various student groups before school and during all four lunches. Students who make a donation of at least $2.00 will receive a strand of beads to wear to show their support for this worthy cause. Donations will also be accepted at various Clark sporting events.

Jasper High School

HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is sponsoring a Hurricane Relief Drive benefiting the American Red Cross. "We are collecting money and/or stuffed animals (preferably teddy bears)," reported Janet Bailey, HOSA sponsor. "We are calling it 'Cash or Cuddles for the Hurricane Victims.'" In addition, HOSA and PALS are hosting competitions between lunches to raise funds, the Student Council is sponsoring a dunking booth during lunches to raise funds for the American Red Cross, and the MAPS classes are donating school supplies for backpacks.

Jasper Theatre Department, under the direction of Renee Harris, will collect money for the Salvation Army, matching 50% of the donations collected during performance nights September 22 through 24. Girls' Athletics is collecting clothes, toilettries, personal items, underwear and socks, and the English Department is collecting items for Jewish Family Services, a United Way Agency.

The JROTC (Plano Senior High group) will collect items for a September 10 garage sale. The money from the garage sale will be given to the Red Cross. Jasper Drill Team members are raising funds through September 22, with the goal of collecting $5,000 for the American Red Cross.

The Jasper Jazz Drill Team and Mrs. Kerri Macy, the drill team sponsor, is very proud to announce that the team has raised $5,024.00 for the Red Cross to benefit the Hurricane Katrina victims in Plano.  Each of the five squads set a $1,000 goal.  The girls enjoyed the spirit of competition while being able to give back to the Plano victims of Hurricane Katrina.  Way to go Jazz!

Vines High School

Through the Vines High School ' "Match Our Money"! campaign, $5,000 was raised from students and staff by the Student Council and National Honor Society. Both groups donated $500, asking students and staff to “match that amount” by contributing as well. All Vines donations will go to the American Red Cross, earmarked for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Williams High School

Many clubs and organizations at Williams HS are participating in activities in support of Hurricane Katrina Relief.

  • WHS Choir is sponsoring a school supply drive and will be accepting donations at their Sept. 20th concert, as well as during the school day. Proceeds will then be given to Plano School Supply project, which is providing between 400-600 completed packages of school supplies for evacuees enrolling in PISD.
  • WHS Student Senate and PALs are working jointly on a three week, multifaceted drive. During the first week, students are encouraged to donate and sign pledge cards in the cafeteria for a dollar donation. During the second week, there will be a ‘Dollar Drive’ taking place during advisory period. A supply collection will be taking place during the third week. If the goal to raise $2000 to be donated to the local chapter of the Red Cross, Principal Sara Bonser has agreed to kiss a pig at the September Pep Rally.
  • Williams FFA, in conjunction with Clark HS and PESH FFA, is collecting food and personal hygiene items to donate to Katrina relief.
  • Encore Drama Club, under the direction of Robin Liesenfelt, is organizing a "Clean Out Your Closet" clothing drive. New or gently worn clothing and new packaged undergarments may be dropped off in the front hallway near the Main Office and in the Cafeteria.
  • Williams HS CIS (Communities In Schools) is running a goods donation drive outside of Walmart on Friday, Sept. 16th. Donations will be passed on to several local charities.
  • WHS Literati Society is collecting money next month at their meeting to be given to the Red Cross to benefit Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

Senior High Schools

Plano East Senior High School

Many organizations at Plano East are coming to the aid of Katrina victims. The following collections are underway at Plano East:

Student Senate will coordinate, along with HOSA, FBLA, JROTC, and FFA through September 18, a "Bucket Brigade" to collect funds for The American Red Cross. Bright yellow, red and green buckets were placed in each classroom for teachers to collect funds. In addition the organizations will collect funds at our home football games at the entrance and at the concession stands.

The Plano East Football Team is donating money from players for The American Red Cross. DECA will donate funds from cookie sales for two weeks to The American Red Cross. The Fine Arts Department, throughout the year, is going to "adopt" Brother Martin High School Fine Arts Department in New Orleans and help them with needed supplies to get their programs up and running again. What is needed is yet to be determined until contact is made with the teachers in the Fine Arts Department at Brother Martin.

"East FFA" (Future Farmers of America), consisting of Plano East Senior High, Clark High School, and Williams High School is trying to fill up a trailer. The drive is for canned foods, water, baby suppplies and personal hygiene supplies. Actually, everything that is non-perishable. There will be a trailer at each school or you can stop by the Agricultural Department at each school to drop off supplies. Dates are: 9/6-9/10 at Clark, 9/12-9/14 at Williams and 9/14-9/16 at East. Contacts are: Clark - Ryan Hufford, Williams - Terry Combs; and East - Karren Kier, Julie Kondoff, or Ken Nicholson.

Ann Palesky's 5th and 6th period classes have collected food, clothing, toiletries and children's games. Senior Class Officers will conduct a school-wide "school supply" drive to assist Hurricane Katrina victims. International Club students are donating profits from t-shirt sales and color glazed ceramics to the Red Cross. The club also plans to adopt students from New Orleans with funds raised from the "Battle of the Continents" event.

Plano Senior High School

The PSHS Swim Team (with several Jasper High School students) will sponsor a car wash from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, at two locations: PSHS (Park and Independence) and the Albertson's at Legacy and Independence. The car wash is free, but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Fund.

PSHS Swim Team Car Wash

Plano Senior High Wildcat Swim Team members collected $5,000 in donations by September 2. The team also held a fundraiser car wash on September 4. Their Coach Craig Harris, who has family in Louisiana, initiated the effort. "He wants us to remember how lucky we are," said Co-Captain Michelle Wong (third from left).

Brazilian Exchange Student Bruno Orlandi, currently a member of the PSHS Wildcat Swim Team, said that, ironically, a different Hurricane "Catarina" landed in Brazil recently (March 2004), near his home. "It was mild...not much damage at all," he said.

The JROTC (Plano Senior High group) will collect items for a September 10 garage sale. The money from the garage sale will be given to the Red Cross. Jasper Drill Team members are raising funds through September 22, with the goal of collecting $5,000 for the American Red Cross.

Plano West Senior High School

The Plano West Wolf Den PTSA will collect items for the victims of Hurricane Katrina who are being relocated to shelters in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Items will be collected on Tuesday, September 6, and Wednesday, September 7, in the main lobby of Building A from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Students, parents, and staff members are invited to bring items to the lobby during these designated times. The items will be delivered to Reunion Arena.

  • flashlights, batteries, emergency medical kits

  • industrial size cans of vegetables
  • bottled water
  • hand-held snack items like granala, energy or breakfast bars
  • protein items such as beef jerky, peanut butter, canned meals
  • bedding items, underclothing (for men, women and children)

PWSH Student Congress will host a change drive during 2nd period to donate to the Red Cross. This will occur September 6-16. Last year, students collected more $3,500 for the Tsunami victims. They hope to exceed that goal for Katrina victims.

The International Thespian Society, according to PWSH's Carla Ford-Rich, is collecting items through September 9 for a specific family who has come to the group's attention. "We are also collecting money to go to the Hurricane Relief Fund. We are looking for a sponsor to match our donation," she said.

The PWSH Early Childhood students and preschool parents will begin accepting donations for the children living in shelters due to Hurricane Katrina. Activity books, crayons, pencils, games, stuffed animals, DVDs, clothing and monetary donations may be donated at the school, beginning on Tuesday, September 6.

School Supply Project

School principals are collaborating with "The School Supply Project," a local community service organization, to provide supplies to the many hurricane evacuees who have enrolled in our schools. The project mobilized on September 3 to put together brand new backpacks and supplies for the 300 to 500 families who are expected to relocate to this area.

Lee Mullen, School Supply Project coordinator, said that a team of approximately 30 volunteers, including students and adults, gathered immediately to assist with the emergency effort. The project's volunteers had just completed delivery of more than 2,600 backpacks to students in need in Plano ISD. Surplus inventory was in storage. Now, the supply is "wiped out," reported Ms. Mullen, who said the program must rebuild for next school year. "We are happy to help. We want the families to know that Texas cares."

"This has been a great opportunity for kids to help other kids," said Rita Fischer, a volunteer with the growing school supply project, which annually works through the Assistance Center of Collin County to provide the equivalent of $30,000 in supplies to school children in need. This is the 21st year the program has been in existence, relying on monetary donations, a golf tournament fundraiser and the manpower of adult and student volunteers. More than 30 companies and organizations assist the project.
