Hurricane
Katrina Relief Efforts
Most
Plano schools
are hosting relief efforts for
Katrina evacuees, like Bria and Kyra,
who received new school supplies through the School
Supply Project.
Elementary Schools
The Aldridge PTA is proud to announce the presentation of a $1390.74 donation to the American Red Cross to aid in hurricane relief. The brainchild of three fourth grade students, Kate Prindle, Anna Harris, and Michaela Caughey, the effort was dubbed, "Coins for Katrina." We salute the efforts of these three girls, as well as the response from the entire student body.
The Bethany community
is invited to join a school-wide relief effort September
6-12. "Students Thinking of Other People" (STOP)
students will be collecting cash donations in the carpool
lines and during the lunch hour.
Beverly
Kindergarten Teacher Danielle Wranosky, U.S. Army,
has been called to active duty to assist
in the recovery efforts in New Orleans. Ms. Wranosky
will be flying helicopter recovery operations in direct
support of the federal relief effort. She is pictured
with her students (clockwise, from left) Maiho Kawabate,
Emma Griffith, Tamanna Dhamani, Lap-Vince Buccini and
Salome
Pareja.
STOP (Students Thinking of Other People) students will be at both
entrances to the school (gym and front door) on Wednesday and Thursday,
September
7 and 8, for parents and/or students to drop off monetary donations.
The group will accept checks made out to "Spirit
of Texas Hurricane Relief Fund" or cash.
Fifth grade STOP (Students Thinking of Others) sponsor teacher

90-member STOP students, along with the help of parents and teachers,

Food Bank.
Carlisle is collecting bottled water; handheld snack items like granola bars,
beef jerky, cheese/crackers; canned meals that are easy to open; protein type
items;
paper plates, cups/plastic utensils; paper towels/napkins; and baby wipes and
disposable cleansing items.
The drive will continue through September 20, with items collected in the front
of the building by the office or in commons area. We are going to Camp Classen
the following week.
Students have raised $7,000 in the first week with the proceeds
from a silicone bracelet sale for Hurricane Relief. The fundraiser

Families, students and staff of Hedgcoxe will collect items

families in our area that are victims of Hurricane Katrina. The
following items will be collected: toys and games, personal hygiene
items, books and other items (no clothing). Items may be
placed in the boxes located in the front of the school.
The
ALL STAR students at Hickey are collecting coins to contribute
to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Within five school
days, the 436 students donated $3,102.19 in coins, bills and checks
to the hurricane relief effort. Students were bringing coins from
their piggy banks, giving their ice cream money and even bringing
in checks from their families! Some students sought donations from
the carpool line after school. One kindergarten student, Larry
J Stanley, canvassed his neighbors for "caring coins" and
brought in a container that was too heavy for the five year old
to carry himself. The donations are going to the American Red Cross.
As the Hickey All Star song says, "Hickey students work to
make the world a better place."

students from affected areas of Hurricane Katrina were welcomed
by Saigling's PTA, who provided items such as muffins and complimentary

drive and other welcoming programs, Saigling students
have shown they believe in their school motto: 'We
Care, We Share, We Shine,'"said Sandy Clark, Saigling Community

CMS has about $2,100 in leftover school supply pre-packs
that were scheduled to be returned to the supplies vendor EPI.
But now, with the possibility of receiving children
and
families displaced from Hurricane Katrina, the PTA will provide
the supplies to children who are victims of the hurricane who enroll
in the school. EPI discounted the remaining
supplies,
and
the
PTA donated
a portion.
That leaves the school approximately $1,500 short. Donations of
about $20 will provide school supplies for a 6th, 7th and 8th grader.
A donation
of $10 will help provide binders and pencils. Donations may be
made via check, payable to CMS PTA and NOTE: KATRINA

the school receives
will
be
used to purchase additional supplies for children placed in the school and other

to the school, at lunch in the cafeteria and after school. We have

School Supply Project
School principals are collaborating with "The School Supply
Project," a
local community service organization, to provide supplies to the
many hurricane evacuees who have enrolled in our schools. The project
mobilized on September 3 to put together brand new backpacks

supplies
for
the 300 to 500 families who are expected to relocate
to this area.
Lee Mullen, School Supply Project coordinator, said that a team
of approximately 30 volunteers, including students and adults,
gathered immediately to assist with the emergency effort. The project's
volunteers had just completed delivery of more than 2,600 backpacks
to students in need in Plano ISD. Surplus inventory was in storage.
Now, the supply is "wiped out," reported Ms. Mullen,
who said the program must rebuild for next school year. "We
are happy to help. We want the families to know that Texas cares."
"This has been a great opportunity for kids to help other
kids," said Rita Fischer, a volunteer with the growing school
supply project, which annually works through the Assistance
Center of Collin County to
provide the equivalent of $30,000 in supplies to school children
in need. This is the 21st year the program has been in existence,
relying on monetary donations, a golf tournament fundraiser and
the manpower of adult and student volunteers. More than 30
companies and organizations assist the project.
