Two Plano Schools Named
to 2005 Just4Kids Honor Roll

November 7, 2005

Congratulations to Plano ISD's Wilson Middle School and Clark High School, who were among 130 Texas schools named 2005 TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll Schools. Sponsored by The Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) and Just for the Kids (JFTK), the Honor Roll Schools program recognized this year 85 elementary schools, 33 middle schools and 12 high schools and transitional campuses.

The schools will host receptions on November 29: Clark at 10:00 a.m. and Wilson at 1:00 p.m. Details follow:

  • Clark High School - (first-time State Honor Roll School)
523 Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75023
    TBEC Reception - November 29 - 10:00 a.m. at Clark
Participants will include TBEC Representative Cecile Russell, PISD Superintendent Dr. Doug Otto and other district leaders, and a small representation of students, staff and parents
  • Wilson Middle School - (four-time State Honor Roll School)
1001 Custer Road, Plano, TX 75075
    TBEC Reception - November 29 - 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Wilson
Speakers will include: Principal George King, introductions; TBEC Representative Cecile Russell, who will deliver Honor Roll presentation; Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto; Plano Mayor Pat Evans; PTA president Dana Bilbray, a student representative; and performances by the Wilson Choir and Orchestra.

George King, Wilson principal, said that the school's ability to meet Honor Roll criteria for four consecutive years can be attributed to "a student body that is able to show improvement and a staff that is commited to helping students succeed." He noted that the school's second-largest student population, Hispanic students, has grown from 7 percent to 20 percent in just the past five years.

"As a result of this shift in our student population, we have emphasized connecting those students, developing their leadership skills and encouraging parent involvement in the educational process," he said.

Stephanie Schmoker, Clark principal, whose school is among only 12 schools in Texas to make the 2005 Honor Roll, said, "Clark High School is elated by the announcement that we are among 130 Texas schools named to the 2005 TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll. We are also excited because this is the first time that Clark High School has received this award.

"Moreover, schools earn this honor by meeting demanding comprehensive performance standards for three consecutive years. Therefore, this award requires a commitment as well as hard work from students, staff, and parents."

In addition to these local receptions, both schools will be honored at an awards dinner in Austin to be held on a December 6. The Plano schools are among 85 elementary schools, 33 middle schools and 12 high schools and transitional schools to be honored this year.

Included in this outstanding list, there are 52 repeaters and 75 schools who made the list for the first time. These Honor Roll Schools will be recognized at a December 6 dinner at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Austin.

In 2000, two of the state's leading education reform organizations, came together to create the TBEC/Just for the Kids Honor Roll to identify and recognize public schools in our state that are performing at the highest level.

Schools make the honor roll by meeting demanding comprehensive performance standards for three consecutive years. They show us how good all schools could be, and serve as effective practice for educators in other schools.
