Schools to Celebrate
National Library Week April 2-8
April 3, 2006
Visit your school or public library during National Library Week,
April 2-8 to use and enjoy books and online resources,
as well as participate in an array of activities. In
keeping with the theme for
2006 - "Change Your World @ Your Library®" - you
are invited to join in the celebration.

About Library Week
Special events in early childhood schools and elementary schools will include displays of bookmark designs, local celebrity readers, presentations by nationally recognized authors, special story times, book swaps, and daily TV announcements relating to books and reading.
Middle school librarians will be hosting lunch-time student book club discussions in the library, presenting booktalks highlighting new books, displaying pictures for a contest matching staff members and their favorite childhood books, plus drawings for special prizes and creating morning news library trivia questions.
High school libraries will be promoting books with events for students and teachers as well as sponsoring drawings for special library-related prizes. Displays of teachers and students promoting their favorite books will be featured at several schools.
In addition to the PISD observances, the various public libraries
will also sponsor a number of activities for children
and adults. For

Also, the Dallas
Public Library System will
host a "Tour Around the
World" family adventure from 10:00 a.m. Friday, April
7, through 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 8, at the J.
Erik Johnsson Library Alive! (2nd Flor Children's Center,
1515 Young Street, Dallas 75201.

Elementary School Activities
Andrews Elementary School
Children's book authors Bill and Carol Wallace talked to students on March 30 about being an author, how they write their stories and how they come up with their ideas. Bill presented to third through fifth graders and Carol presented to first and second graders.
Bethany
Elementary School
Students are creating an acrostic poem about the library. They will be displayed around the school for all to read. Some of the poems will be shared on the morning announcements.

Brinker Elementary School
Librarians asked teachers and staff to tell them the
title of their favorite book when they were a child. The following
pictures show a few of the displays around the library showing
the books chosen, and identifying the teacher who chose that
as his/her favorite.
Carlisle Elementary School
Nationally recognized children's author, educator and speaker Bill Wallace and his wife Carol will speak to all grade levels. Bill will talk to the third through fifth graders and Carol will speak to first and second graders.
Harrington Elementary School
Students from Jami Smith's first grade class (l-r) Marissa Nelson,
Kagen Crouch, Sydney Broyles, and Sarah read " Pigsty" inside
a makeshift bubble designed by Librarian Sheila Smith. Ms. Smith
said the students had fun in the bubble, reading such books
as "Pinocchio" - "After all, he did end up in the belly of a
whale!," she said.
Pearson Early Childhood School
On Tuesday, April 4, storyteller Dorayne Breedlove will present Where the Wild Thing Are for the students. This event is sponsored by Pearson PTA and Pearson Library.

Rose Haggar Elementary School

Middle School Activities
Armstrong Middle School
Staff members were asked, "What was a favorite book in your middle school years?" Students are to match each staff member with their selection. Prizes will be given out for the students with the three highest matches. Students may ask the staff to describe the book to help in the quest, but the title is a secret!
Frankford Middle School
Lizzia Xu and Ben Nichols (pictured below) won the National Library
Week Bookmark Contest at Frankford Middle School, during National
Library Week.
Entries were voted on by the Frankford staff, and the top two
winners were chosen based on their design and the related theme,
"Change Your World @ Your Library."
Hendrick Middle School
For all sixth graders, "Book Talks" were held in the library on March 29 and March 31 highlighting new books in the library. On April 4, the Hendrick Book Club met to discuss the book of the month, Boy, by Roald Dahl.
Renner Middle School
Renner will be holding their 2nd annual Reading With the Stars program this week. Local celebrities and community leaders will be on the campus to read to the sixth grade students. They will be stressing the importance of reading in the students chosen career. Special guests include Plano Mayor Pat Evans and professional basketball player Nancy Lieberman.
Wilson Middle School
A full week of events are planned at Wilson Middle School. On Monday the event is SSH-USH (Sustained Silent Hearing-You Succeed Here), a read aloud activity. "Read Me Day" is on Tuesday and students who are wearing readable clothes are asked to stop by the library and be read. Wednesday will be "Get Carded at Your Library". Students who produce their library card will get to pull a prize from the "Get Carded" box. Students will bring their lunches to the library on Thursday for the "Listening and Lunching" activity. On Friday students will try to match a teacher to their favorite book. A book and a statement that express why the book is a favorite will be on display and students will try to figure out what book goes with what teacher.

High School Activities
Shepton High School
Each student will receive "Research Tools" pencils, National Library week bookmarks, "READ" coloring sheets & stickers, and a fortune cookie. In addition, a drawing will be held for Barnes and Noble gift cards. There will also be a display entitled, "My Favorite Book Is..." with staff and student contributions.
Williams High School

Senior High School Activities
Plano West Senior High School
At Plano West, the staff is invited to help celebrate National Library Week by wearing a book badge with the name of their favorite book. Teachers will take time to "book talk" their favorite reads with their students.
