September 20, 2005

The school is named for the late David B. McCall, Jr., Plano ISD educator and local businessman and civic leader.

Mr. McCall began his teaching career in the Plano school system in 1946. He became the first principal of Mendenhall Elementary School (then named Plano Elementary School) in 1954. Upon retirement from teaching in 1956, he purchased the Joe Bradshaw Insurance Agency and renamed it David McCall Insurance Agency.

McCall Family members, pictured in front of the new McCall Elementary School, include (l-r) Brian McCall, Nellie McCall and David McCall III.

Mr. McCall served two terms as the mayor of the City of Plano, was president of the Plano Chamber of Commerce and served for 24 years representing Plano and the North Texas Municipal Water District Board (chairing the board many years).

He was named Plano Citizen of the Year twice and was honored among Plano ISD's 100 Heroes during the school district's centennial celebration in 1999. The City of Plano named its downtown plaza in his honor in recent years.
