Performing Arts Achievements
Plano ISD's music program is designed to provide opportunities
for each student to develop his/her creative talents in band, choir
and orchestra. Students are doing just that and more,
as they have excelled in recent performing arts competitions.
Plano Student Wins State Music Competition
Senior Leslie Wadleigh, Plano Senior High School, sang at
the state Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) competition
held November 5 on the Southern Methodist University campus.
Leslie earned first place in the Senior Vocal Division.
The Senior
Division is made up of students 15 to 18 years of age. Each vocalist
must prepare a memorized program of two art songs in languages
other than English, one art song in English and a fourth piece
of the
singer's choice.
As the winner of the state-level competition, Ms. Wadleigh will
advance to the South-Central Divisional competition in Lafayette,
Louisianna, in mid-January. Winners of the various division-level
competitions will compete for the national title at the MTNA Conference
in Austin on March 27.
PSHS senior Scott MacConnell also competed at SMU on Saturday.
Both singers are members of the Plano Senior High School Choir,
which is under
the director of Derrick Brookins and Chris Ahrens, and study private
voice with Lois Landrum.
TMEA Honor Orchestra
Five of the top 15 high school string orchestras in the state
of Texas are from Plano I.S.D. The Texas Music Educators Association
(TMEA) announced the results of the 2005-2006 Honor Orchestra Competition
this week, following two rounds of judging.
Plano West Senior High School Chamber Orchestra Named 2005-2006
State Honor String Orchestra
This ensemble is directed by Jo Wallace-Abbie. This is the third
time in the short seven- year history of Plano West that the orchestra
has received this distinction. As Honor String Orchestra this group
from Plano West will present a 50-minute concert for the membership
of the Texas Music Educators Association at their annual convention
in San Antonio in February, 2006.
Orchestras entering this competition must submit a recording of
a live, unedited concert to TMEA. This year, 33 orchestras submitted
recordings for consideration. A judging panel listened to all of
the submissions and selected the top six. A second panel of judges
listened to these six recordings and ranked them. Orchestras that
have won the honor orchestra designation are not eligible to submit
a recording the year following their TMEA appearance.
Four 0ther Plano ISD Orchestras Place
in Top Half of State-wide Rankings
- Plano Senior High School Orchestra - Jeff Turner, Director, 3rd Place
- Jasper High School Orchestra - Julianne Booth,
Director, 4th Place
- Shepton High School Orchestra - Joshua Thompson,
Director, 8th Place
- Clark High School - Andrew Going, Director,
14th Place
This competition does not distinguish between varsity and non-varsity
programs, thus these 9-10 schools competed against recordings of
varsity orchestras from 9-12 grade high schools across the state.

Five Plano Singers to Become Opera Scholars
Five Plano ISD choral students were selected to be a part of the Dallas Opera Scholars Program. Through a series of class sessions, high school students are introduced to opera as an art form and receive a behind-the-scenes look at the many aspects of bringing an opera production to the stage. Students study the season's operas in depth and attend performances of selected operas; they also attend final dress rehearsals of the remaining operas. There is no cost to the students. The entire program has been underwritten by The Dallas Opera and its patrons.
Students must be nominated by their high school music teachers. A class of 20-25 students from the pool of teacher nominations is selected each season by the Opera Scholars committee. This year 49 students applied and 23 were accepted to participate in the program.
