NEW YORK
by Hannah Philley, Grade 8
Armstrong Middle School
Lights. Camera. Action.
Oh, the noise of New York. The taxis
are speeding a million miles a minute. The vagrants
are begging for food. Celebrities are being
chased like a cut of meat. I can hear the roaring
sound of a concert.
The dazzling marquee of the Gershwin
Theater shines in the blistering night air.
It is the dead of winter.
Backstage the costumes hang on the dark,
ugly wall, just waiting for their character
to come put them on.
I see some of the characters already getting into
their matted, delicate and at the same time
durable, costumes. The show starts in an hour.
Thirty minutes have elapsed. People are lining
up at the box-office to see the Lion King. Little kids are
anxiously waiting to see their favorite
safari characters.
The guards are now letting the dog-tired parents
and their rowdy children into the theater.
While they are being seated, we take our places
on stage.
I am a performer.
