Plano
Youth Leadership
Seeks Applicants
February 3, 2006
Plano
Youth Leadership (PYL) is now accepting applications for its 2006-2007
leadership program. Students
who are currently enrolled in the 9th grade and planning to enter
the 10th grade during the 2006-2007 school year are eligible to
apply if they reside in the area serviced by the Plano Independent
School District. The purpose of PYL is to train students in leadership
techniques and community awareness to prepare them to make a positive
impact
on the quality of life in the Plano community.
Through a series
of monthly class sessions, which run concurrently with the school
year, students develop the confidence and knowledge they need
to succeed in leadership positions while learning about service
opportunities
around the community.
According to PYL board president, Stephen
Miller, “Our program
gives students the unique opportunity to meet with city officials
and work with other local education and business leaders to develop
their individual leadership skills.” PYL class VIII graduate
Hunter Follett echoed Miller’s enthusiasm, saying, “PYL
took my leadership to the next level. This program’s training
is invaluable and the experience is unforgettable.”
The PYL
Selection Committee chooses participants who represent a cross
section of the community, based on information provided
in written applications. Completed applications and reference
forms must be postmarked no later than April 7, 2006. Applications
are
available at Plano public libraries, Plano high schools, and
the Plano Chamber of Commerce office. The application can also
be downloaded
from the Plano
Youth Leadership website.
Tuition for the program is $100 per participant, and need-based
scholarships are available for qualified students. For additional
information, call Vicki Cravens at (214) 334-2773.
