He does spend time on preparing for classes doing homework, but that’s not what he does in all of his spare time. Waking up 15 minutes late and rushing to class isn’t what typically comes to mind when thinking how the valedictorian of the senior class spends
his or her morning.

As for senior Jeff Nanney, who happens to be the PESH valedictorian, he usually spends his mornings waking
up late. Nanney does not fall under the stereotypical category of a ‘smart guy,’ spending all waking moments studying and working on school projects.

“I would consider myself to be a procrastinator, but I am sure to have everything done for my classes before it is due,” Nanney said.

Nanney and his dad spend time together watching games on ESPN. They frequently discuss sports at the dinner table. According to Radha Patel, one of Nanney’s friends, Nanney can be just
like anyone else. “I don’t think of him as that really smart guy, he’s just like everyone else and likes to have fun,” Patel said.

Nanney is a part of many organizations at PESH, including the IB program, the Math Club, Quiz Bowl, Spanish Club and co-president of the National Honor Society. Nanney feels very grateful for his
parents’ support.

“They do a great job at giving me opportunities and I am extremely appreciative,” Nanney said.

After graduating, Nanney plans to attend Harvard and major in math to pursue a career as a professor of mathematics. “I may change my mind four or five times but for right now and for a while now, this is what I have wanted to do,” Nanney said.
