Staff Survey Results Indicate Strong Interest in PISD-Sponsored, Quality Child Care Program

February 9, 2006

Baby ShoesNearly 85 percent of employees who responded to a recent survey conducted by the student services department said that they would enroll their child in district-sponsored child care.

Results of the survey were reported by Arlene Carnes, Pasar after-school program director, to school trustees at their February 7 meeting. Ms. Carnes noted that the survey, which was administered and tabulated by the Texas Association of School Boards, was conducted to investigate employee interest in a district-run child care program.

Survey Results

Some 2,117 employees (30%) completed an online survey in late 2005 administered by TASB, in conjunction with Plano ISD Student Services. A few resulting statistics follow.

  • 41,765 - staff members with children under the age of five
  • 41,022 - have or plan to have children in the near future
  • 484.94% - would enroll child in PISD-sponsored child care if charged market rate
  • 467.0-5% - have missed 1-7 days per school year because of ill children
  • 464.57% - would return to work after birth of child, if Plano ISD provided an affordable, quality child care program
  • 472.87% - would use PISD-sponsored child care accommodating mildly-ill children

Recommendations proposed as a result of the survey include opening one child care center in 2007 which would serve approximately 120 children. “A second center would open one year later, based upon success and need,” said Ms. Carnes, who noted that the full-day program would serve children six weeks old to kindergarten age.

“The district’s goal is to offer quality care, including a curriculum that is child-centered with strong emphasis on language and literacy development,” reported Ms. Carnes, who noted that tuition would be $75 to $150 less per month than market rates.

Ms. Carnes shared several employee comments, including one from a classroom teacher: “It would be great to know that such a great school district would provide equally excellent child care for my child.”
