Updated February 4, 2006

The Texas Education Agency has approved Plano ISD's waiver request for an August 9, 2006, start date for the 2006-07 school year. The Plano ISD Board of Trustees is scheduled to adopt the entire 2006-07 PISD School Calendar at their February 7, 2006, business meeting (Board Meeting Agenda: Calendar).

Based on the approved date, a proposed calendar has been established, including:

  • A full week for Fall Break.
  • Semester exams prior to Winter Break, and fairly balanced semesters.
  • Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving as a holiday.
  • The last day for students in December prior to Winter Break is December 21.
  • Students will return on January 4.
  • Teachers will observe a workday on January 3.
  • A total of 87 days of instruction are reflected in the first semester.
  • To complete the required days of instruction, students would be released on Wednesday, May 23.
  • Teachers would observe a workday on Thursday, May 24, allowing for a total of 92 days in the second semester.
  • A total of 179 days of instruction are represented by this calendar.

At their November 1, 2005, meeting, school trustees held a public hearing regarding the calendar waiver request to begin school on August 9, 2006. Of the 34 speakers who addressed the board, 31 indicated they supported the board’s waiver request for an August 9, 2006, start date; two indicated they opposed the waiver request; and one was neutral.

Following the public hearing and comments by board members, trustees voted to apply for a waiver to begin school on August 9, 2006.

Trustees are required by state law to host a public hearing and apply for a waiver from the state, if the start date proposed is before the state-mandated school start date, noted Karla Oliver, executive director for government and community relations. Ms. Oliver presented introductory information to trustees prior to the public hearing.
