Frankford
Middle School Teacher Named Presidential Award Finalist
April 9, 2007
Kathy
Letchworth, Frankford Middle School mathematics teacher, is among
three state finalists for
the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and
Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honor for k-12 teaching
in these fields.
She
said that the most important trait a teacher should have is the
ability to be sensitive to each child’s emotional
needs. “While teaching students how to add and subtract fractions,
I also need to convey to them that I care about them as individuals,” said
Ms. Letchworth.
“Kathy
carries the torch of education in every aspect of her life,” said
Frankford Principal Susan Modisette. “Her
enthusiasm is shared by her peers as she searches out the latest
educational research, creates new activities so that students find
the relevance of math, networks with other teachers to share ideas
or writes new curriculum.”
According
to the National Science Foundation, Presidential Award winners
have the knowledge, skills, commitment and determination to bring
out the best in their students.
