Children's Book Week
November 17, 2005
Elementary schools across the district held "Children's
Book Week" activities this week, November 13-16. During this
annual event, our elementary schools helped foster a love
and proficiency for reading in children. Read about activities
on this site, and view related links.

A week-long book fair was held at Barksdale Elementary School.
Children in every class had the opportunity to shop at the book
fair.

Knocks Your Socks Off"; Thursday - wear shirts from different
places we have been because "Reading Takes You Everywhere";

Is Wild About Reading!"

staff pigs from "If You Give A Pig A Party" decorated
the front office and baked a cake. Students and staff enjoyed
the activities of book swapping, reading with a book buddy, book
character dress-up, book donations and warming up to a good book.

students will play bingo for prizes. These activities will
allow parents time to shop by themselves.

Pearson Early Childhood
Special dress up days will be held for students and staff
to wear different colors that will coordinate with the theme of
the day. Daily themes are: Monday - "Books Brighten
Your World", wear yellow; Tuesday - "Have You Read A
Good Book Today?", wear red; Wednesday - "We're Blue
Without Books.", wear blue; Thursday - "The More You
Read, The More You Grow.", wear green; Friday - "Pearson
Peacocks Love Books!", wear Pearson colors.
There were
also questions of the day to go along with the color of the
day. For example, Monday's question was "What color
is the hat that belongs to Curious George's friend?" On Friday,
we gave out all of the answers and had a book drawing for each
neighborhood. The librarian read the teacher's favorite children's
book and gave out special stickers to students and bookmarks to
staff to celebrate the week.
For parents and staff, the librarian
made a special display of PISD administration, principals, and
board members with their favorite children's book. Did you
know that Dr. Otto loves Arthur? Also, Mrs. Schmittou and
Pearson students celebrate Red Day for Children's Book Week.
Thomas Elementary School
On Wednesday, staff members dressed up as their favorite book
character for Children's Book Week at Thomas Elementary School.
Spotted during
the activities were Johnny Appleseed, The Cat In The Hat and
Mr. Popper's Penguins. Principal Swanson read The Cat In
The Hat to first graders.
Weatherford Elementary School
Each day during Children's Book Week there was a book drawing
during the morning announcements for each grade level. On Monday,
third grade girls enjoyed an American Girl Tea & Lunch.
Plans for Wednesday included the dress-up theme "Warm-up to
a Good Book." Children were encouraged to wear warm-up
suits. Also on Wednesday, students enjoyed a "read-in" during
selected times in each grade level. On Thursday, all fifth grade
students enjoyed a visit by a Plano Public Librarian. A "Harry
Potter" breakfast was held on Friday morning.
Wyatt Elementary School
Wyatt celebrated Children’s Book Week last week with a Trek
to the Outback! Wally the Wallaroo was trying to get from Plano
to Sydney, Australia for a vacation. Wally only got to travel if
the students read every
night during the week. Students also could win a coupon to Outback
Steakhouse. The grade level who read the most had a special movie
and popcorn party!!
Also, Wyatt's librarian explorer, Outback Jackson,
gave clues everyday to a different grade level, starting with
Kindergarten, and going
through fifth grade. Mrs. Jackson dressed up as an Australian
explorer, with music and backdrops supplied by the music teacher
and art
teacher, respectively. The clues also ran on a Powerpoint for
the students. New books were given to the winner in each class
who
guessed the right location.
