Six Plano Students Named
Intel Science Talent Semifinalists

February 8, 2007

Often called the “Junior Nobel Prize,” the Intel Science Talent Search is among the world’s most prestigious academic honors. This year, Intel announced six Plano ISD students who captured Semifinalist standing. They are among 300 students awarded from across the United States and 16 students awarded from Texas.

Intel STS Semifinalists

  • Arhana Chattopadhyay, Plano East Senior High
  • Sai Prasanth Venkateswaran, Plano East Senior High
  • Gabriel Ha, Plano Senior High
  • Aatman Shah, Plano Senior High
  • Louisa Xu, Plano Senior High
  • Sunshine Zhou, Plano Senior High

The Science Talent Search (STS) was created in 1942 to encourage talented high school students to pursue careers in science, math, engineering, or medicine.

If continued accolades are a measure of success, the contest has met its goal. Some 70 percent of Science Talent Search finalists have gone on to earn either PhD or MD degrees.

The Intel Foundation will award $1,000 to each semifinalist with a matching amount going to their schools. Intel implemented the school award in 2000 and since then has contributed more than $2 million to help improve math and science in U.S. high schools.
