Meadows
Elementary, Shepton High Capture Recycling Awards
August 25, 2006
Congratulations
to Meadows Elementary School and Shepton High School for being
honored this month by the North Texas Corporate Recycling Association
for their outstanding recycling programs.
Meadows Bulldogs Rough on Waste
Meadows students and staff were
recognized for efforts to recycle single stream and organic material,
educating students on the
importance of recycling and participating in full circle recycling
that has direct benefit to the environment. This year, the school
began to recycle organic waste from its breakfasts as well as
lunches. Data indicates that Meadows diverted 32.3 tons of organic
waste from the landfill to the city’s compost facility
and increased its single stream recycling 19 percent above the
prior year.
Shepton Stallions Rein In Awards
Shepton’s comprehensive
and award-winning recycling program has increased each year in
effectiveness. Every classroom, office
and hallway has a recycling container for paper, plastic bottles
and aluminum cans. To further advance recycling at Shepton, there
is a teacher recycling committee and student Youth for Environmental
Sanity (YES) Club who model recycling for the community. Shepton
diverted an average of 5.1 tons of organic material per month to
the city’s compost facility and 17 tons per month of single
stream waste from the landfill.
