Leader Academy to Help
Develop District's Top Teachers

This summer, Plano ISD will debut its new Team
Leader Academy for approximately 90 of the district's "best
and brightest" teachers.
During the week-long training,
teachers will study such
topics
as
supporting
and
retaining fellow teachers, grading and communicating with parents
and fellow team members in positive and effective ways.
 Becky
Wussow, director
of human resource services, noted that a 20-member Team Leader
Academy steering committee has collaborated over the past several
months to create
a framework
for the Academy with emphasis on four key areas: leadership,
management, student achievement and communication.
"The team leader curriculum development committee has been working
diligently since September to create a district curriculum that
targets the development and capacity of building leadership,"
said Ms. Wussow. "With an infusion of humor and an emphasis on
best practices, the writers are exploring and developing many important
and potentially difficult topics."
The group has
drawn insight from personal professional experience and
a wealth
of
educational
and leadership
literature, including "What Great Teachers Do Differently" by
Todd Whitaker and "Teach With Your Strengths" by Rosanne Liesveld
and
Jo Ann Miller, as well as "Crusial Conversations" by Kerry Patterson,
et al.
The steering committee will have an opportunity to preview its
collaborative work on January 11. The academy will be conducted
over the course of five days during the summer of 2007.
