National School Counseling Week

February 4-8 is National School Counseling Week, when we shine the spotlight on the 160 counselors whose dedication helps create "Pathways to Success" for the 53,500 students attending Plano schools.
2007-08 Counseling Program Initiatives
- At the elementary level classroom guidance and individual planning enhance the total school program for all elementary students.
- Elementary counselors teach personal safety, motivation to achieve, decision-making skills, and college and career awareness - just some of the components of our guidance program.
- Elementary counselors teach an average of 300 guidance lessons per year.
- Elementary counselors form small groups, addressing changing families, newcomer issues, behavior, academic support, and friendship.
- Middle school counselors make contact with more than 200 parents within a six-week period, addressing the transition to middle school, scheduling, and academic planning.
- Middle school counselors are currently preparing for academic conference, and 4-year plans for all 8th grade students.
- The Kuder Career Assessment is administered by middle school counselors – this online tool measures student skills and interest, provides career clips, starting job salaries, and college facts and comparisons.
- High school and senior high counselors will begin academic conferences for all 10th and 11th grade students -7,362 individual conferences will take place.
- More than 1,900 parent contacts are made by senior high and high school counselors in the first six weeks of school
- Senior high counselors hold the two largest college nights in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex, with over 250 colleges and universities attending.
- Secondary counselors are involved in CollegeEd guidance lessons at pilot schools where students learn the importance of a college education. Counselors train teachers on state testing, interpreting data, and helping students achieve goals.
- Counselors are all former teachers with a master’s degree.
- Counselors s erve more than 53,500 students in grades prek-12.
- College and career planning is a focus of both secondary and elementary counselors.
- Paul Weaver is chairing the Southwestern Regional College Board Forum this month in Frisco, Texas.
- Secondary counselors are involved in working with students and parents as the students prepare for the next level of education.
- All counselors provide referral and resources for families in need and families in crisis.
Plano ISD counselors were honored at the February 5 meeting of the Plano ISD Board of Trustees with a resolution recognizing National School Counseling Week.
Paul Weaver, director of guidance and counseling, recognized Plano ISD counselors and the college readiness program at the secondary level. Paula Nickel, director of guidance at Plano East Senior High School; Sharon Berryman, lead counselor at Vines High School; and Sharlene Barton, team leader counselor at Frankford Middle School, made a presentation on college readiness.
All counselors stood and were recognized for their outstanding work within the district.
