December 21, 2007
The Plano ISD KEYSS (Keeping Education Your Stepping Stone) Fall Conference, co-sponsored by the Plano ISD Student and Family Services Department and Collin County Community College, through a partnership with the Destination College Program, was held on Saturday, December 8, at the Event Center at the College's Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco.
Some 127 students and parents from Williams and Vines High Schools and Wilson and Bowman Middle Schools participated in the conference.
Catherine Jagers, columnist for the "Dallas Morning News," opened the conference with an engaging and inspirational presentation on her experiences as a teen and the impact of education and family on her life.
Parents received valuable information and parenting tips from Juliette Echaniz and Desirree Silva, parent educators from the Plano area, who held classes on parenting adolescents and dealing with stress in the family.
Rosa Maria Crocker, from PISD Plano Family Literacy, presented on the programs available to parents seeking adult basic literacy.
The girls attended College 101 Prep classes and enjoyed working with the Collin College student ambassadors. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Texas presented on the importance of mentoring and worked with interested families in matching up Little Sisters.
The KEYSS Conference Planning Committee consisted of Plano ISD Student and Family Services staff, including Josie Ryan, Gina Ramirez, Rebecca Lara and Collin College's Marcy Wilson. The team is hard at work preparing for the Spring KEYSS Conference that will be held on April 19, 2008.
