West JROTC Cadet Selected
to Attend National Security Forum

 Ryan Downing, a third year JROTC cadet at Plano West Senior High School, has been selected for the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security to be held in October in Washington D.C.
According to John Napoli, Jr. (Major, U.S. Army, retired), Plano West senior army instructor and district coordinator, Ryan's selection was based on academic excellence. "He is an outstanding young man who we are proud to have in Plano West JROTC," said Major Napoli.
At the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security: Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense, Ryan will have the opportunity to meet students with interests similar to his and to interact with trendsetters and policy makers in the diplomatic, defense and intelligence communities.
Beth Schultz, National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security director, said in Ryan's letter of invitation, "You will have the opportunity to pose questions to the guest speakers, who are individuals faced with making important decisions on a variety of national issues. They are interested in hearing your questions and concerns. There are also frequent opportunities to discuss and debate issues with fellow students from across the country."
As a Forum participant, Ryan will take part in a national security strategy exercise, which will focus on hypothetical events taking place in the eastern Congo region of Africa. This exercise was developed to illustrate the process that high-level officials use to address international security issues.
