May 15, 2009

One thousand books and a grant for $25,000, all gifts donated by Capital One, were recently presented to the Plano Family Literacy Program. The Plano Family Literacy Program, which offers services to families in Plano ISD, is housed at the Allan K. and Carolyn H. Bird Education Center at 1300 19th Street in Plano. Representatives of Capital One, the Plano Family Literacy Center, Plano ISD and Foundation participated in the April 17 presentation.

Capital One EventCapital One funding primarily augments critical services offered by the school district to economically disadvantaged families through the Plano Family Literacy Program. Over the last three years, Capital One has funded more than $76,000 to benefit the Family Literacy program.

Margarita Rodriguez and her daughter Emeli Ordonez are among the many family members served by the Plano Family Literacy Program.

The Plano Family Literacy Program offers a full array of services to families and students with an intensive, year-long curriculum including integrated literacy, adult education, home visits, early childhood education, and parent education. To participate, families must reside in Plano ISD, commit to all program hours, have a need for literacy instruction, and meet certain economic criteria.

As part of the Plano Family Literacy instructional program, Capital One volunteers also provide financial literacy classes to hundreds of adult learners, helping all participants develop important skills needed to function in today’s society.

Plano ISD Executive Director of Student and Family Services Dr. Cathy Galloway explains, “The Plano Family Literacy Program is an important community outreach effort of Plano ISD, helping many of our families who are in need of literacy skills build capacity in their own lives and learn vital skills to help their children succeed in school. The program is funded through a public-private partnership of the school district and the Plano ISD Education Foundation. The private support is very critical.”

“Capital One is proud to support Plano ISD programs that provide services to help families and children as they grow to become successful members of our society,” said Capital One Senior Vice President of Auto Finance and Plano ISD Education Foundation board member Samir Deshpande. "Through the Plano Family Literacy Program, we can support programs that foster the type of environment where children and families have opportunities and resources to reach their full potential.”

Capital One EventIn addition to renewing support of the Plano Family Literacy Program, Capital One also renewed underwriting of the Plano ISD Education Foundation annual fundraiser, Ski Plano 2010, with a $5,000 Vail-level sponsorship.

All proceeds from Ski Plano benefit priority improvement projects identified by Plano ISD for which tax dollars are not available. Priority programs include: initiatives that improve science, math and technology instruction; an educator grant program offering teachers added funds for instructional programs; student scholarships so that all fifth grade students can participate in the district’s off-site environmental science camp; and programs that recruit, retain and recognize outstanding teachers.
