Plano ISD Students Win 5 of 16 State Geography Contest Awards

Geography Poster Contest Winner and FamilyPlano ISD students captured 5 of 16 top awards in the 2008-09 State Geography Awareness Week Poster Contest, "Mapping the Americas: Exploring People, Places, Environment, Culture, Landscape," sponsored by the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education. The contest attracted 25,000 entries across the state of Texas.

The top four winning posters in each grade category (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12) were selected by a panel of independent judges. The four first place winners were recognized during an awards ceremony held in their honor at the state capitol building in Austin on November 19, 2008.

Congratulations to these Plano ISD winners.

Grades K-2 Division

  • 1st Place - Akhil Mulakala, 1st Grade, Stinson Elementary School, Teacher: Glenda Ross
  • 3rd Place - Aryan Agarwal, Kindergarten, Beverly Elementary School, Teacher: Danielle Krasnesky
  • 4th Place - Ferona Bustani, Kindergarten, Miller Elementary School, Teacher: Lori Jones

Grades 3-5 Division

  • 2nd Place - Alexandra Marquis, 3rd Grade, Daffron Elementary School, Teacher: Julie Herrera
  • 4th Place - Rooshi Nagar, 3rd Grade, McCall Elementary School, Teacher: Connie Matthews

At the state awards ceremony, representatives from the offices of Texas Senator Florence Shapiro, Representative Patrick Rose, and Representative Jerry Madden joined Dr. Richard Boehm, co-coordinator of the Texas Alliance, in acknowledging the outstanding accomplishments of the winning students and their teachers.

Representatives from the National Council for Geographic Education, Social Studies and Assessment Divisions of the Texas Education Agency, and Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board were also in attendance to participate in the celebration.
