Science Researchers Capture Prestigious International Awards

Science researchers from Plano Senior High School, Plano East Senior High School, and Clark, Shepton and Williams high schools earned accolades at the International Science and Engineering Fair held in May in Reno, Nevada. Attending the event were 1,563 students from 50 nations.
Students received top honors at regional and state science fairs to advance to the international fair. "Students' qualification to attend the international fair is often a once in a life-time achievement," said Plano ISD Secondary Science Coordinator Linda Flack, congratulating participants and award winners.
Ryan Alexander, Clark HS - 'Best in Category'
Ryan's science research "Gone With the Windmills: An Analysis of the Effectiveness of an Oscillating Wind Energy Generator" earned one of only 19 Best in Category awards at the fair.
As a result he will receive a $5,000 scholarship, a trip to Switzerland, and Clark HS will receive a $1,000 to promote science fair. Ryan also captured a First Grand Prize in his category, which provides a $3,000 scholarship.
Special Awards
The Power Plus Engineering scholarship for $1,500
The Environmental Protection Agency Award, which includes a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 2010 P3: People, Prosperity, and the Planet Design Competition for Sustainability and to display has project at the National Mall.
The National Collegiate Inventors and Investors Alliance, giving Ryan a scholarship for $1,000, which recognizes innovation and invention.
Navaneeth Ravindranath & Amruth Venkatraman, Clark HS - '4th Grand Prize'
This dynamic student duo's research project "Novel Control Methodologies for Conserving Energy with Electrochromic Windows" earned a 4th Grand Prize award, which includes a scholarship of $500.
Janice Zhang, PSHS
Special Awards
Miss Zhang's science research project "Information Distance and Its Implementation in Spam Detection" in the computer science category was awarded coveted special awards, including:
- The Drexel University scholarship for $150,000
- University of Florida Institute of Technology $12,500 scholarship renewable for each of four years
- U.S. Army Award for a $3,000 scholarship
Brian Truong & Rohan Shah, Clark HS
U.S. Coast Guard Award
Brian and Rohan's science research, entitled "Navy Scum: A study of the Prevention of Biofilm" and entered in the environmental management category, was recognized with an honorable mention award from the U.S. Coast Guard. This award recognizes the projects which best display the potential for improving boating and water safety that furthers the Coast Guard's mission.
