Middle School Grading Practices
April 8, 2009
District Statement
The objective of the Middle School Grading and Assessment Committee is to consider grading practices that are consistent with the philosophy that grades should be the most accurate reflection of student knowledge and achievement. The aim is to improve student learning and provide meaningful feedback in addition to assessing a grade.
This review of grading practices will not compromise the Plano ISD’s standard for academic excellence, but does ensure that we are discussing compelling views about the philosophy of assessment.
The committee has not made determinations about current practices, nor has it made any recommendations to school administrators. There have been no changes to the current middle school grading assessment practices in Plano ISD.
Any recommended changes, as a result of the committee’s work and inclusion of teacher input, would receive thorough discussion at the administrative and school board levels.
As educators, we have an obligation to be aware of and in conversation about contemporary educational methods and best practices. We are studying current views on the role of grading in the learning process. There should be an element of equity and consistency in grading practices within individual campuses and the district as a whole.
The committee is addressing the areas of separating behavior from student achievement; dealing with late work; dealing with academic dishonesty; and how to assess homework assignments. In many cases, grades reflect student knowledge in addition to their work habits or behavior, and this is being studied.
“Our district’s team of educators considers the topic of grading and assessment a relevant issue and worthy of study. But, the academic integrity of the Plano Independent School District is steadfast. Any changes to practices or policy will be thoroughly vetted,” said Dr. Doug Otto, superintendent of schools.
